Hi all. I’m a newb to the whole swimming thing. I recently joined my local try club and have gone to two of their open water swims. I am not a strong swimmer, but I am able to complete the entire mile lap with no issues. But, as soon as I get out of the water I immediately start to feel dizzy and nauseas. It takes a few minutes for my head to come back, and I’m generally spaced out for a good 15 minutes. Anybody else deal with this? Is it something that’ll go way with time? thanks
Do you have any allergy/sinus issues?
back in HS I would actually black out doing flip turns if they were really bad before I figured out I was having allergy issues.
Now it isn’t so bad as I know what is up and do my best to control it but the weighlessness in the water seems to make it worse at times. If I’m doing my free/back cool down set I often times get dizzy when going back to freestyle.
No allergy or sinus issues that I know of
.
This used to happen to me quite often and it was because I was getting water in my inner ear. I started wearing ear plugs when I swim and that pretty much solved it for me. I like the Tyr silicone molded ear plugs, they have worked very well for me.
That sounds like it could be my problem. I am constantly banging my head to get the water out of my ears! I’ll gee the plugs a try
+1 for ear plugs.
Use the soft silicone “pine tree” kind. Easy to store with your goggles, and to pull out in T1.

I had the same issue…for me the water was adjacent to my eardrum and it caused vertigo/nausea.
I solved it by using a small eye dropper bottle (Visene) filled with rubbing alcohol. I keep it handy in transition A drop or two in each ear and it displaces the water away from my eardrum. Instant relief!
On longer swims, I tuck it inside my wetsuit and use it as soon as I get out of the water.
Hopefully the ear plugs work, if not I’ll give the alcohol a try. Thank you
You just need to get used to it. After 10 swims you should be fine.
