The back of my throat is very irritated after a hard effort . . . lots of coughing. Anyone else get this? It’s quite annoying. It lasts a day or so. My guess is that it is from stomach acid that gurgles up during the event??
Happens to me, especially on long runs and rides. I always thought my sore throat was more from breathing heavily through the mouth as opposed to nose, making my mouth and throat dry out more.
This happens to me as well. After races (and a few really long workouts), my throat feels a little sore and I have difficulty exhaling on deep breaths (no problem going in, only out). I thought it was a mild case of exercised-induced asthma, but haven’t been concerned enough to have it checked out. I don’t think it would register on the exercised-induced test anyway.
Me too.
I figure it’s either my throat getting dried out from the increased amount of air movement, or a very minor case of exercise induced asthma. It’s only an occasional thing with me, so I’m not too concerned about it.
yeah, same for me. I usually try to run and ride and chew gum to keep my mouth from drying out
I get the same thing, especially after a really hard effort, like my running coach’s dreaded 2-mi time trial to determine your pace group for the next session.
I still remember the day after IMC 2001 (first IM) – went to Denny’s that morning and ordered the works: biscuits & gravy, etc. Took a couple of bites and had to stop; my throat was so sore and raw. I think I survived on milkshakes & smoothies the next couple of days.
Thanks
Jeff
Not my throat, but the roof of my mouth feels like it is burned for 2-3 days after the race. Anyone else get this?

Thanks for all the responses. Good to know that I am not the only one.
Yeah soft palate/roof of mouth irritated - only after IM’s…I have one now after CDA. No idea why but I also went with the dryness theory…

It’s funny that someone started this thread. I was wondering what was up after running Grandma’s marathon in Duluth, as I have a scratchy throat now after the race.
I’ve had it it tends to happen when you’re breathing more through your mouth and not through your nose. I find it worse on colder days or really hard efforts (I found it happened more to me when I was running track in university then it does in Marathon/Du/TT/Road racing).
I get a sore throat and tons of mucus in my nose/throat for a few days after my long ride. Last month, it was so bad, I went to the doctor because I thought it was strep. He told me it was hay fever and said to take some medicine (Allegra, I think). Since I have a mistrust of drugs that are advertised on TV, I drank plenty of fluid, ate cough drops, and waited for the problem to go away on its own.
I remember seeing one of those Discovery Channel documentaries on Lance Armstrongs Tour de France preparation. He mentioned the same thing happening to him. He mentioned gargling with Listerine afterwards as some type of antidote or as a means of preventing it from getting worse. Whether it works or not I started doing it. I t doesn;t make it go away but it seems to prevent the symptoms from getting any worse.
