Ok, so I’m trying to install the BB on my new Ti frame. It is probable that I had it cross threaded, now I can’t get the threads started on the drive side. Is it more likely that I screwed up the BB or the frame? Ti frame, Shimano splined BB. Please help?
Most likely the cups are bad if aluminum. At this point take it to a bikeshop and have them look at it. It likely needs the frame threads chased.
In the future thread the loose cup in first as far as it will go. Then put the bottom bracket assembly in, the loose cup will act as a guide - kkeping the bb assembly straight. You will probably have to back the loose cup out as you thread the bb in.
Stop. Before you do anything else, what kind of frame do you have? How is the BB shell threaded, English or Italian? Does your BB match? Do you know? Did you (your shop) chase and face your BB shell?
Sounds stupid, but here’s what happened. The screw that hold the cable guide in place was put on at the place of origin. I removed the guide and screw, and bingo, the BB went in straight, true and completely by hand. Of course I followed up with a torque wrench to the proper tension. Thanks for all the info.
Wow, I clicked on this thread expecting it to not have a happy ending. Good job. Very few people have the basic, simple intuitive skills to figure out what you did. This stuff is not rocket science. It is just good, common mechanical skill. Nice job, I’m glad you did a fine job sorting it out. Well done.
Thanks Tom, that means a lot coming from you. Now, any hints on cabling this beast, before I totally hose that up? Just kidding, I’m pretty sure that I just need to take my time and make sure that I have enough slack to allow for the handlebars to still move. But of course any tips are appreciated.
