Anyone who routinely or is planning on riding through Camp Pendleton be advised the section of Stuart Mesa from the Vandigrift intersection to the top of the hill will be closed to bikes until January 15th.
I work just past that area and bike commute and there is no alternate route unless you want to ride I-5. Plan your rides accordingly.
Over the years they occasionally close the base for this or that reason. I would always just ride the fwy, just stay right as there is a big lane there, but watch out for all the road ornaments. It cuts off a couple miles from the camp route, and it is super fast with all the trucks moving the air your direction. It is not that bad once you get used to trucks going by you at 70mph…
That’s a bummer if true as that’s my near weekly stomping grounds. Hope they find an alternative ON base.
I hope you meant petitioning for Basilone, not Baseline:) Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Basilone lack bike lanes/shoulders altogether and actually has curbs?!?!
Neal, the detour through mil housing was lifted several weeks ago. The were repaving the road between the main gate and the new MCX/new hospital/commissary area. Not that I condone this, but during that construction/repaving/detour, I never had a problem riding through that area (MCX/commiss) w/ PMO nor other motor vehicles. It was a quick block or two of fingers crossed no cops, no cops, no cops. There I confessed;)
Bummer. I enjoyed the housing detour, especially when timing the light at the bottom of the hill correctly. However, on a long ride coming back, I was not as excited to see the required detour.
Not a fan of having to ride on the freeway as the only alternative. Hopefully something is resolved soon to allow a pathway through Las Pulgas…
Do you guys know if this closure alters the Wednesday Pendelton Ride? I am going to try and jump in and was curious if they go through the closed area.
I heard back from the base public works department. The signs have been taken down, the contractor not only prematurely put them up, they put bogus info on them. at least in terms of the dates.
there will be some road work in this area and the signs will go back up but they couldn’t tell me when. I’ve also asked for a means in which Marines or the general public can find out about critical bike route closures in advance rather than rolling up only to find we’re cut off with no alternate route. if I hear any more I’ll post it.
