Pool/gym in downtown Boston?

I’m coming to Boston for the marathon but am building through the race and was hoping to find a gym/rec center where I could swim. Anyone have a recommendation for a Masters group or a pool downtown that I could drop by?

Thanks!

When I used to live in Boston, I used the Sports Club/LA pool (and gym). Im not sure what the day rate is for non members, but you could always tell the sales associate that youre looking to join (they usually give out a weekly pass). Im sure others might have a few options.

Another option is the BU pool (which is great). Just pretend youre hanging out with the college co-eds and you wont have a problem getting in.

the masters programs at BU and Harvard are both 10$ for the day
.

If you can afford it, like was mentioned before Sports Club LA has one, and is a pretty freaking nice gym to boot. When I lived there, they didn’t do day passes, only a trial membership - but you have to go through a whole sit down thing to get it.

Looking back on it, especially for downtown Boston, the price really isn’t that bad - I was just young and fairly broke at the time.

I know MIT/BU/Northeastern etc. all have pools that I swam in, but I’m not sure what the “normal person” fee is - I always got in with friends attending school there.

Honestly, my solution for “swimming” in Boston was to just skip the pool entirely. I got a Vasa Ergometer, and trained my arms off in the winter. Then during the spring/summer/fall, I did Vasa during the week, and hit up Walden Pond on the weekends. That actually yielded my fastest swims ever.

The Doubletree in Downtown Boston is connected to the YMCA where you have access to their full facility including pool. Great for business travelers who need to get a workout in

the boston harbor hotel has a spa with a lap pool. don’t think it’s 25 meters, but maybe 60 feet? anyway, there are probably better options with regulation length pools. have fun! c u there:)

I swam at SCLA (attached to ritz carlton downtown) and over at BU
BU masters is awesome and on the T line so easy to get to from downtown

not sure you can get a BU day pass if not connected to BU unless you do masters

MIT has the nicest pool in Boston. Masters swim team practices at 6:15AM and 7:15 PM. They also have rec swim throughout the day. Cambridge Masters is good too but is a bit of a trek and will be quite crowded. Heads up, the MIT pool is on the chillier side.

The Hyatt across the Charles in Cambridge has a full 25y pool.

Agree, MIT pool is awesome.

Awesome, thanks all! Seems like a few good options that I’ll have to check in to!

Piggybacking onto this “where’s ____ in Boston” thread…where can I get beet juice downtown? I don’t really want to have to check luggage just so I can lug 500mL of beet juice along with me, but it’s always been hit or miss for me trying to find it in new places.

Whole Foods would probably be your best bet. Closest one is by Symphony - off Mass Ave. by Huntington

I’ll also preemptively answer the MOST important question.

Where’s the best bar to go to after crushing a marathon in Boston?

  • Corner Tavern (Mass Ave. and Beacon) - awesome little local place, not many know about
  • McGreevy’s (Boylston) - Sox bar, usually loud music and have some great beers on tap
  • Pour House (Boylston) - college bar, young and fun with a good basement and imperial pints!
  • 21st Amendment (Beacon Hill) - awesome prohibition style bar with a low ceiling that can be cramped
  • Parish Cafe (Boylston) - beer snob paradise, a bajillion types of beers there for any taste, slightly more polished crowd
  • Dillon’s (Boylston) - old police station, cool vibe and an all around good bar, slightly more polished crowd

+1000. ~$15/day pass though.

Allow me to add that Crossroads (Mass Ave/Beacon) is closing their doors for good and marathon Monday is their last day in business.
