Pockets on Trisuit

Triathlon Taren makes an interesting point in his most recent video --The pocket the the back of your trisuit slows you down on the swim. I had never thought about it, but it makes total sense. All my trisuits have back pockets. Have I been needlessly sacrificing speed all these years, or is this a bunch of nonsense? I suppose the options are a new non-pocketed trisuit or a swim skin.

I can see the back pocket slowing you down if it actually opens up while you’re swimming. The back pockets on my trisuits firmly fit against my back and / or open from the side, so there really isn’t a practical way to water to open them up. Now if your rear pockets are saggy and loose, then I could see it being an issue, on the swim and the bike.

^^^^This.

Most well designed trisuits have a pocket design that is near zero drag. The pockets will be empty during the swim and stay pressed against the body.
Castelli puts the openings on the side so that water flow won’t open them; Desoto as “waterlid” pockets with a flap that covers the opening, etc. etc.

It’s not like swimming in a bike jersey.

I’ve never had an issue with pockets, but I have one trisuit that turns into a literal sea anchor when I wear it without a wetsuit. Neckline is too low. I’m female. I’ll leave you to deduce the result.

I havent considered swimming without wetsuit. Guess this is a non issue, for that case?

For this reason, I prefer side pockets, but the suit I designed did not offer them. But, they are very tight and would be surprised if they produce any drag.

Non issue for wetsuit swims…or non-wetsuit swims where you are using a swimskin over the trisuit (ex. almost everyone at Kona).

This post is worthless without photos.
