Please educate me on Chamois Cream

I’ve done a IM, 1/2 IM, bunch of sprints, 100+ mile rides but never used chamois cream. However now I’m having friction issues on rides over 2hrs.

So I’m 2 weeks out and I thought that I would be at a point where my 5+ hr rides would be painless but I’m not so now I’m thinking maybe some chamois cream might help.

a: do you apply after the swim?

b: any issues with running?

c: when training do you just rinse the shorts after a workout to clean it off?

d: any brands that work better than others?

e: on a 112mile ride do you need to refresh?

Thanks for any thoughts.

More is better.

a. I’d do it before.
b. Nope. Feels better. (I’m a big boy).
c. If I use a little for a short ride, I hang to dry and re-wear. If long ride, I machine wash.
d. Chamois Butt’r is my favorite. I’ve tried them all. No affiliation.
e. Need? No. Like to? Yes. These or similar are handy. I throw away the carabiners.

More is better. I have found no upper limit to that rule.

Unless you are raw or still ride a real leather chamois, you don’t need to use it. If you are raw, get something like DZnutz that have some healing properties to it. Although I do like the euro-tingle versions I don’t use it unless I really need it anymore. I do have a Floyd’s of Leadville single use packet in my saddle bag in I’m up poop creak and need to get home.

Need??? probably not. But anything longer than 3hrs I use dznuts or chamois cream. Always use before an ocean swim. Apply liberally but not to the extent you just finished a porn shoot. Never tried re-lubing but I’ve ended a marathon in a super humid race walking like a cowboy. Which the post shower still haunts me. I would’ve paid a lot of money prior to that experience. Tough call on what’s worse grundle chafing or bloody nips.

I have used a bunch of different ones over the years but I started using Body Glide Cycle and have never gone back. Not sure how different it is than normal Body Glide. Pretty sure it would work well too.

Apply it before and never reapply during.

A. I put on before swim and it usually is fine.
B. No issues. It can help.
C. I machine wash stuff after, not bc of cream but bc that’s just what I do all the time. Maybe not immediately. It just goes in my laundry pile.
D. DZ nuts or just the boring body glide sticks. I’ve been into body glide so hands don’t get gross when applying.
E. Don’t need, but can if having an issue. Throw a couple of the small servings in your special needs bags. Done.

thank you for that. LMAO

A. No. I apply liberally before the swim and hope for the best
B. Nope. My tri suits and run kit have very good compression and no seams in the wrong places
C. Turn inside out, hang to dry, throw in the wash
D. I prefer Betwixt. Not too thick, not too thin. Works great for me.
E. Not usually, but I do slip a single use Body Glide cream or Chamois Buttr into special needs bag just in case

I find I need it a lot more on the trainer than outside. Also use Chamois Buttr.

I make my own, from a recipe found via La-Google.

4 oz Shea butter
2 oz Lanolin
2 oz Coconut oil
1/8 oz Peppermint oil
1/8 oz Tea Tree Oil

Melt the shea butter, lanolin, and coconut oil in a pan, low heat. Pour into an 8+ oz jar. Let cool. As it thickens, add the tea tree oil and peppermint oil and stir. Put in freezer for a few minutes, then stir up to make a consistent creamy texture.

We get the Costco size gallon jar og coconut oil to use for cooking, and the other ingredients I got via Amazon. Cheap, takes just a few minutes to make a batch that lasts me quite a while, it’s thicker and easier to handle than Chamois Butt’r.

IMO you are wasting your money on buying the race specific lubes. Gold Bond Friction Defense can be gotten at any drugstore for a couple of dollars. I use it just like the name: anywhere you may have friction…ass, groin, nipples, knees, pits… Holds up for marathons, centuries, and full distance Ironman. I think the only time I had to reapply was for DK 200. And I found out their headquarters is in Chattanooga. Can’t understand why they are missing the market opportunity but then again if it gets popular the price will just go up .

I can handle an hour and half with no chamass cream. For longer rides I use Assos, for shorter stuff, Chamois Butt’r euro style is my jam. Mad alchemy has an activated carbon one that is nice, but disturbing to see a black chamois afterwards.

Keeping a small single use packet for reapplying on long rides is nice, just don’t confuse it for a gu when you are in a dark place mentally.

I cannot fathom that some people can go completely without it.

I always use chamois cream on trainer rides and usually on outdoor rides too. I’ve found that my bottom is more prone to abrasions as I’ve gotten older. I’ve used Chamois Buttr which is OK, but I prefer Assos.

Making a video now, hold on a sec…

I use to just use Noxema. It worked fine, no idea what it costs compared to the other specific stuff they sell for this.

The udder cream or noxema is good. I mostly use it indoors.

Always wash your shorts after every ride. Don’t be gross.

Thx, I always wash between wearings but was more interested in if I needed to wash right after the ride (I tend to let the shorts dry and then wash in batch mode).

I picked up a couple different products and will see what works best, I like the Butt’r packs for the ability to stash on the bike and will add some to my special needs bag on the bike.

Thanks all for the feedback

I throw them in the hamper and they come out fine

Actually started using chamois cream before running recently after getting some chafing on the undercarriage. Always use it when racing, only ever really had problems with my neck though, I can usually even do a full distance without any in my shorts.

For full body I used Huub Luub and if just chamois or undercarriage I used elite ozone or veloskin. Often use on my nipples too when running.
