Planet-X USA/UK

I was under the impression that the UK company had the affiliate company, USA, for stateside orders.

But on comparing their actual Planet-X wheels, the UK has cheaper prices including shipping to the US than our stateside supplier. Are they not affiliated as closely as I thought?

Also interested in any info that might be given!

This is a great question for Brian Ray, the owner of the PX USA distributer. He’s on ST (not sure of his username), but his e-mail is brian@ohiotri dot com.

Brian Ray here from Planet-X-USA…Sorry I jumped into this a bit late. The pricing issue is a delicate one as it is often due to many fluctuating variables…such as currency exchange, which can (and does) change on a weekly basis. That being said, we are VERY tied in with the U.K. folks, and buy all of our products from the same factories. However…like anywhere, sales are often driven by supply (inventory), and we are not always offering the same sales at the same times.

Today, for example, you will see that they (the U.K.) are offering their 82/101 wheelset at a price of $600 USD, including delivery. Our current price is $699. However, we WILL MATCH THE PRICE. On the flipside, you will see that the 50/82 wheelset is offered at $766, including delivery, where our price is over $100 LESS.

I hope that this clarifies just a bit. It is not always a perfect system, but we (the USA and U.K) speak almost weekly, and try as hard as we can to provide you product of the best quality and the best price (and hopefully, in a consistent manner.)

Blessings,

Speaking of wheels -

is there anyway to get an 82/82 wheelset?

I currently have a 50/50 (w/ PT) set that I run with a disc cover. I’d like to get a deeper front, but I don’t know if I’m comfortable with the 101 for two reasons.

1> Zipp doesn’t “allow” PTs to be built into the 1080s, so I can’t imagine it’s good for other 100mm wheels, but wheel builder seemed comfortable doing it. So that’s a /shrug.
2> I’m not sure that I want to run a 101 rear in Kona next year.

Today, for example, you will see that they (the U.K.) are offering their 82/101 wheelset at a price of $600 USD, including delivery. Our current price is $699. However, we WILL MATCH THE PRICE.

Man, that’s a STEAL for that wheelset. You guys price match from 2009?? just kidding!
I sent you an email on it earlier and I know it’s not going to happen, but a PX Tri Spoke front, Disc rear combo as PX prices would be killer for use amateur folks on a budget. You should think about doing a one time run - hint hint.

OK GUYS AND GALS…I REALLY stepped in it on this one!!

This post is a CORRECTION to my post last week about “matching prices” compared to the U.K.

I do NOT retract my comments in full, but I feel that I do need to help everyone understand some things.

This is in full-disclosure - not that you need to know everything about my business…but in the spirit of being 100% forward…here go’s:

Planet-X-USA has been the exclusive distributor of Planet X bikes and products in the USA since January of 2008.

This DOES NOT mean that we have the same cost structures ( i DO have to pay something for the honor of being the distributor!!), and we do NOT carry 100% of the same products.

Dave (the owner of Planet X in the U.K.) is an AMAZING business man. One of the things he is able to do is to go to market and make very large purchase of some specific item…buy a LOT of them…and receive a handsome discount. This is just business.

However…we in the USA are not always privy to those “one-time” buys.

Also, we build our bikes differently. As you’ll see on their website, for example, they are running a special that includes the FSA NeoPro crankset…we do not carry this crankset at all…so…NO…I can’t price match it.

As I mentioned in a previous post, we will do our best to match what we can. However…though you are all AWESOME consumers…you have to understand that we are also a business, and we can’t price-match everything…DEMAND and INVENTORY are often the real decisive factors in running sales.

We will continue to work the best we can to make you happy…but please understand…we cannot price-match everything. However, what you CAN count on is that we will be real upfront and honest with you…which may mean telling you to order it from them. They are a MUCH bigger shop than we are, and we are still trying to understand the buying habits of all you fine slowtwitchers out there!!

Stay Tuned…we WILL be offering another round of “insane x-mas deals” just like last year!!

Blessings,

Brian

+1. Very much agree, love my PX road bike with the Sram Red. Brian made me a deal I could not refuse and backed it up by meeting me just an hour away from my house on his way back from a trip for delivery.

Do you know if/when you will offer the Planet X disc wheel? If so, do you have any idea about cost?

I know you can’t really say so, but any chance you guys are going to offer the wicked year end sale again in 2010???

I’ve been considering a PX carbon road frame purchase. I’m betting that your Xmas sale will push me over the top : ) Please have an XL on sale, OK?

Wow,. I guess you can say! I am kicking myself foor passing last year. My input would be sell complete bikes, specifically black stealth large ultegra

Frames. Blow them out! I am sure those Nanolights are simply getting in the way and need to be moved. I am willing to help you out and take a L from you …

so the newer wheels have planet x designed hubs, not the american classic hubs?

Brian, I’d love to see some more deep clinchers, specifically front wheels. I know a lot of people like myself run a disc cover and would love some front wheel only deals. Not sure if it’s even a possibility, but a front wheel clincher of the H3-ish tubular wheelset you previously had would be sweet.

They appear to be Joytech hubs, at least on the 82/101 set I got in April.
