Planet X suggests their rear stay tolerances are very tight and they recommend using smaller tire sizes than 700x23. They have recommended a couple on their site, but I am going to run clinchers, and am wondering what tires people are having success with clearances.
Also there is an extra “plastic insert” that seems to be a little longer than the ones installed from the factory in the rear where the wheel mounts. Does this help any with the clearance?
Yes, I know that piece of plastic going across the stays is trash and support for shipping, but there are 2 “bushings” that fit in the wheel slots. There are 2 additional “bushings” that are included that are a 1mm or 2mm longer that can swapped out. Do these help with the clearances.
I also understand that they are suggesting sizes smaller than 23mm for tire size. Would like to run the largest size possible, and curious to see what brand and size is running successfully. Hate to spend $100 on a clincher tire also.
The Exocet will include frame, fork, seatpost and seatpost clamp, and will come in White/Grey (pictured) and ALL Black (Matte Painting). The Tapered Headset is not included, but will be an additional $54.99 (see dropdown below). This headset is specific to the Exocet as it has 2 different size bearings.
The Exocet is built with very tight, UCI Compliant, tolerances.** As such, we HIGHLY recommend using the Schwalbe Durano 22mm, Vittoria Corsa EVO CX 21mm, Tufo S3 Lite 21mm or Continental Competition 21mm tires with this frame.** As you are aware, tire sizing is NOT an exact science, and these tires have been proven to give generous clearance within the frame. Using larger size tires could result in a rubbing in the rear stays.
Can you post a picture b/c I am not understanding what you are describing. At first I was going to say those were not for the width of the tire, but, for the fitting to the seat tube, but, I may not understand what you are describing.

I run 22mm Contis on HED3s on a Cervelo P2C. They’ve worked just fine. Used Bontrager 19mm TT tires previous to that, but they are harder to come by. On standard box rims I run conti 4000s in 23mm. Another great tire IMO. So are you in the loveliest village in the plains?
Not sure what the hell that is. I have been around the block more than once and have no idea what that is, nor what it would possibly be used for.
It appears to be a little longer than the shim already inserted in the slot…but what for? I would assume that it would give a little extra clearance, but don’t really know how much clearance for what. PX recommends some tubular sizes that work well, but not clinchers, and I hate to “experiment”.
Thanks for looking though! Will contact Brian at PX tomorrow.
Hrm. I’ve got an exocet and didn’t even realize there was a second dropout spacer! Either never got it or accidentally threw it out. Going to have to get some.

Are you running tubular or clincher. What brand and size? How are they working?
I’ve got one… well sort of one. Basically got it from the taiwan trading company, but it is the same frame. It is really not an issue of the tire and seat tube cutout or even the chainstays… The tightness is around on the seatstays just below the brakes… That being said I run a conti 23 tire which measures almost 24. The wheel is stiff enough that I don’t pull it into the stay. I have Hed Stinger 90 with a Vittoria CX 21’ I race on and I have rubbed the rim up against the stays on the non drive side when it wasn’t perfectly straight. It is just not as stiff. I can imagine with the extra paint the PLanet X’s have that the clearance is even tighter.
I just took the spacers completely out to get the tire closer to the cut out. I personally feel like it is a really fast bike. I’ve had a p2 AL and a P2C. Good luck!
That’s what I thought you were describing. It is almost certainly a drop-out spacer, but, I am not sure why there are two different spacers. Must be for a different type of wheel, but, I am at a loss.

Clincher. 20mm gp4000. My 23mm gp4000s don’t fit, but in another thread someone mentioned they do on his bike. Maybe I just don’t have the right spacer on the dropouts, though the skewer is pretty far back in them. I’ll ask PlanetX for a new pair of spacers and see if that changes the fit on the 23mm tires.
Brian just emailed me stating that most 21mm clinchers should work, and that the second spacer could be used if you needed additional spacing. I am curious to see if the second spacer will work for a 23 or give better clearance on the 21.
From my experience the spacer didn’t help. I had the longer ones in and tore out the sidewall of a continental grandprix 4000 (23), while going down a hill, my first time riding it. Didnt hit the ground, but the ksyriums ended with a sold gash taken out. I ended up switching to tubular 19s.
