Planet X Exocet 2, experience

Hi there

Has anyone this bike?

It would be great if you could post some information and pics.

Or what do you think about this bike (frameset)? I think for the price it seem to be a nice deal.

To me, it looks just like the first Exocet. almost exactly alike

It is a refinement of the same frame design as the Mk1.
I understand the changes are; the toptube cabling, I think more clearence on the rear triangle for wider tyres, and fixed an issue on the internal cabling that could give some FD shifting problems.

X2

Apparentlt they have refined the seatpost clamp too.

Looks a very nice bike indeed.

And they’ve changed the headtube-to-top tube junction, with the headtube upper race now stepped down below the level of the top tube.

I believe that is correct. I own an Exocet 1 and the above changes are indeed needed (except maybe the cable routing, I don’t care about that much).

The seatpost clamp is also changed. I think a lot of people were having issues with some carbon cracking at that junction. I never had that issue, but my seatpost clamp was coming loose and allowing a lot of front/back/side/side play…I yanked the entire thing out and JB welded it back in to place. Looking at it, I think the seatpost clamp didn’t perfectly match the carbon tube dimensions (close though), allowing some play and eventual cracking.

That’s what I get for being the guinea pig on the first-run frame. I like the frame, but some of those little issues are a pain in the butt. Glad they fixed them.

I race with the Exocet 1 w/ Sram Red, 50mm front/101mm rear tubulars. I find it just as good if not better as any mid-range TT bike. I have PRs of a 2:09 HIM split and a 54:24 40k split with the Exocet. I’m biased however, as I’m on their team. You’ll be happy with that Exocet2 frame for sure.

UpQuark, just curious, how much does that setup on the exocet weigh?

Also does anyone know of any windtunnel testing on the Exocets? And anyone know for sure that 23 inch tires (for example on Hed Jets) would fit on the Exocet 2?

Thank you.

23mm tires will fit no problem. I don’t have Hed Jet’s but i have my training tries in there now and they measure closer to 24 (although they are labeled 23)

Thanks Ewan. Any other thoughts on the bike? Stability Stiffness? How much does your rig weigh? Ever seen any aero data on it or their wheels?
Thanks

Re: stiffness: always kinda subjective but here is what I know: it has a massive BB area + BB30 + big chainstays = equals plenty stiff for me (and I am a “bigger guy” at 6’4" 170 if that counts for anything)

As far as aero goes: I haven’t seen any data on the frame itself, but it ticks a lot of the “Aero Best Practices” boxes (cables behind head tube, 3:1 tube ratio, low stack), and most importantly it lets me get nice and low for my fit.
Never weighed it (or any of my bikes for that matter) as i can’t afford to go down the weight weenies route
Hope that helps

Thanks Ewan
.

Does anyone have any idea how to clean the matt finish of the Exocet 2? I’m building one now and it shows every tiny fingerprint. Anyone sprayed theirs with clearr??? Such a nice bike but it seems like its gonna be a pain to keep clean

does the firecrest, or any of the 28mm wide wheels fit?

sorry I don’t own firecrest :frowning: Maybe someone else who does might chime in.
I will say that there is a lot more room (much more than v1) so the odds are better.

I confirmed with Brian at PX that the Exocet 2 is compatible with Firecrest rims.
