Places to Swim in Westchester County, NY

i’ll be home visiting my mom over the weekend in ossining and wanted to keep up my training if possible. does anyone know where i can swim within 15-20 minutes drive? i know club fit but they don’t allow non-members in.

thanks.

I know that the Tarrytown Y used to allow you to purchase a day-use pass, for like $5. Of course, this was many moons ago, so I’m sure the price has gone up, if that option is even available. There’s another Y in White Plains too.

If you are a brave soul you can swim right in the Hudson. If I were gonna try to do so in that area, I’d go to the Croton-Harmon train station, and park all the way at the end near the kayak put-in.

PM me if ya want more details.

why dont you just go to club fit and tell them you are interested in joining and would like a one day pass to test it out … you can give them your moms address and phone number if they ask where you live.

the tarrytown y is a good suggestion. i may try that.

club fit will make me take a tour. that’s an hour i don’t have right there. in the past, they’ve been real sticklers too. you got a guest pass?

LOL… you suggesting this and smartass34 agreeing gets you major points to be honorary smartasscrew members

hey, wait… i didn’t exactly “agree.”

but i did just email the club to tell them i was an ironman triathlete looking for a place to swim over the weekend. we’ll see how that goes over. they probably think an ironman is an old guy who takes multivitamins.

Actually they have a triathlon class that Josh Gold teaches there. A number of triathletes from this neck of the woods use the club.

If you’re a member of a Y, you can go to any out of town Y and use the facilities for $5.00.

If you want some OW swimming, go to Rye Playland beach after 4:00 pm and it’s only a few bucks to get on the beach. You have to make sure high tide is in the afternoon though otherwise it sucks.

Scarsdale has a nice outdoor pool complex with good lap lanes. I don’t know if you can get in, though, unless you know a town resident. Worth checking out.

listen you dont need to take the hour tour … just tell them your thinking about joining but only care about the pool … then you get the 5 min tour like i did … then you tell them that you are particular about the chlorine levels and water temp so you would like to have a pass for the day to try it out! i dont think you will get very far with - poor me im a triathlete trying to find somewhere to swim for free!

I swim at Club Fit but I’ve burned thru all my guest passes there, but I can hook you up with a day pass to Premier Athletic Club in Montrose, which is about 15 min north of Ossining. Or bring yoiur wet suit and take an OW swim off Croton Point Park in the Hudson. It’s 40 miles north of the NYC tri swim and just that much cleaner! PM me.

Or you could hit an OW swim in the Sound (Rye Beach, Mamaroneck, Larchmont, etc.)

As a former resident of the area, the above is the best suggestion. Also good Sound swimming on the CT side.

Ossining is a ways from Long Island Sound…depending on time of day, it could take you two hours.

Why not just swim in the Hudson River?

I like to swim in the Croton Reservoirs… This is illegal, but whose gonna see? And if they catch you, which hasn’t happened to me yet, just say “sorry, I won’t do it again.” Park at the intersection of 100 & 118 and go right in where the fishing boats launch. Just meander down through the woods, and you can’t miss it. It is cleaner than th Hudson, plus no current or power boats. If I were there, I’d join you. I’d also help you out with Club Fit, as I work there… But I’m in Canada, so sorry…

You can pay to swim one day, I believe, at Marymount pool in Tarrytown. I think the new Pace pool over in Pleasantville also does one day pases. That pool (Pace) is REALLY nice and never used.

But I still vote for the reservoirs… They are free… And close…

glad to see i have another person supporting slightly naughty things - everyone else seems to want to go for the more innocent and honest approach
.

honesty pays off!!! i just got an email back from terry at club fit who’s going to leave me 2 guest passes.

the open water swim sounds good as well at the reservoir - may try that one of the two days.

“And if they catch you, which hasn’t happened to me yet, just say “sorry, I won’t do it again.””

And they’ll say "Glad you’re sorry. Now here’s your ticket. It’s a NY City summons for, the last time I paid one, $100. Yeah the reservoirs are cleaner than the Hudson but the Hudson is cheaper! And it takes balls to swim the Hudson!!!

Who will they make the ticket out to? You don’t have to fess up to having a car nearby. Just tell them you ran there and make up some name/address…

trying to rack up those honesty points …haha
