Places to Ride, Swim, Run X-Canada...Going on a trip

I am moving x-country and will be stopping in various ‘cities’ across the way. I am looking for open water swimming, ok rides and safe runs in, around, or on the way to:

Kamloops, Canmore, Drumheller, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste marie (ont) and Sudbury.

I am strating in Victoria and ending in Ottawa but I have a good idea where to go in those places.

Thanks all,

Brian

Quite a few of the cities you mention have a Running Room store located in them, with Sunday 8:30am club runs, and Weds evening 6 or 6:30pm club runs…free to join in, usually several groups going out for varying length runs, and a good source of local info…check out the store locations at www.runningroom.com.

If you starting out in Victoria, I might suggest your swim base to be the Commonwealth pool in Saanich, just o/s the city, good enough to be the base for an Olympic Tri champion !!

Sent you a PM…

Kamloops: keep going to Salmon Arm. Swim in Shuswap. Take Salmon River Rd south, then back up the OK valley near Armstrong… about a 4 hour ride

Canmore - go past Canmore about 30-40km, head south on hwy 40 to Kananaskis… it’s about 30km to Fortress Junction Gas Plus station. Ride south over Highwood Pass about 65km to the gas station on the south side of the pass. refuel and return. This is the highest paved road in Canada… the pass is 2206m… prepare for some serious climbing. Do not attempt in marginal weather… it has been known to snow at the top in Summer! I can also be scorching hot… so bring 2-3 full bottles if sunny.

Regina: Park at North end Walmart (Pasqua St North and Rochdale Blvd), take hwy 11 to Lumsden, head north to Craven and return. If your there on July 8… Regina Beach Triathlon. Regina Beach is an decent place to open water swim. just take hwy 11 about 5mins past Lumsden and turn north on hwy 54 secondary.

Brian,

As Synchronicity said, if you are interested in driving through Kamloops and getting to Salmon Arm (an extra 1.5 hrs) I would be happy to hook you up with some of it all. OW swimming is great at Canoe beach (shuswap Lk), TONS of great riding sans traffic, and runs-a-plenty. For info on Kamloops you might want to get in touch with Timemachine.

I live in Salmon Arm so let me know if you need any other info.

I am bringing wife and 2 kids. It is more or less about getting an ok ride/run/swim in the morning before we take off from/arrive at whatever city we’re in for the night. Nothing too long.

30k rides, 5-10k runs and a 1500+m OW swim (somewhere safe).

How old are your kids and when are you coming through? If your kids are young I have some suggestions for things to do in the area.

Shouldn’t be any problem at all getting those distances in. Canoe beach is 375 m within the roped-off swimming area so 4 lengths is a perfect 1500m.

robert

My kids are 9 and 3.

Thanks for the distance info.

My kids are 8 and 4 so if you want any beta on kid-friendly activities in the area, let me know. Of the top of my head I would suggest the BC Wildlife Park just E of Kamloops (toward Salmon Arm), the Enchanted Forest between Salmon Arm and Revelstoke, and the great new swimming pool in Revelstoke.

Sounds like quite a trip with two kids. My head hurts just thinking about it.

robert

Yeah I could have flown but I wanted the kids to go to Drumheller.

We went to the Wildlife park a couple of years ago when I did the Bighorn Tri or something like that.

Might check out the enchanted forest though that sounds like a good distraction for the kids.

The kids will really like the Enchanted Forest. Bring some food though as they really don’t have anything on site. Canmore would be another 3.4 - 4 hrs East.

When are you passing through?

robert

Passing through Kamloops on the 23rd staying the night and heading out in the AM.

Darn, I was going to offer to show you around but I am in Cranbrook for the Prestige 1/2 that day.

Happy trails anyway and let me know if you have any other questions.

robert

Thanks appreciate all of yours and all others help thus far.
