In brief;I’ve got it.I don’t want it.Only solutions not involving rolling my arse on a tennis ball will be considered.
ART or TP massage ball.
A good chiro and assorted stretches helped to contain mine. You got something against tennis balls?
Go to a CMT who is experienced with your problem.
I just don’t want my kids to think I’m any more bizarre than they already do…
Have your significant other massage the area after your workouts. I have piriformis syndrome pretty badly, and I love my post workout “butt rubs”!
Tennis balls tend to flatten out too much. TPMassage Ball works wonders.
Check their website and address all the things that cause it and you will be on your way. My wife had some serious issues with her piriformis and it truly helped her out.
This helped me ALOT. I even had nerve pressure and numbness down my legs from the injury:

I kicked my piriformis issue in 2 days, perfect in 4 days. The stretches will hurt ALOT, but you will get better.

I had that problem for around 3 months before doing IM Hawaii. I went to physio, massage therapy and did the tennis ball routine. I just couldn’t get rid of it. Even the morning of the race, I was on the floor rolling on the tennis ball. I did the race anyway. The next day, of course I was sore ALL OVER, but didn’t notice any unusual soreness in the piriformis muscle. After my recovery period of around a week of doing nothing, I noticed I also didn’t have any problem with that muscle. Soooo, sometimes you’re better off just taking a week off and let your body do the repair it needs to. Once repaired, you definitely need to find what is causing it. My advice to you, if you have tried everything already and it’s still bothering you, then just take some time off. Anyway, this is a good time of the year for that.
Seen hundreds of these in my 20 + yrs as a chiro. In fact, one just left the office five minutes ago. Usually a sacro-iliac joint problem is also involved. Usually chiro tx with stretching works quite well.
having done the whole piriformis number, i (1) got a ton of physical therapy, and (2) kept on doing ALL of the stretching exercises therefrom. it was just such a time, effort and money taker that i am sufficiently motivated to do the stretches every single time i come in from a run or bike. the original injury took me to the PT in the summer of 2001, and i’ve kept the thing at bay since.
in short, PT and stretching (and upping core strength) fixed the original problem, and constant stretching has kept it from coming back.

Thanks all. This is just so much easier than searching the web myself…think I am going to get my kids on here with their homework questions and maybe the ball and chain for a few recipes…good weekend.
There are good examples of stretches if you google piriformis. You don’t say how you got it. I’m guessing on the bike. That’s how it hit me. I changed my bike position, pushed my seat back and it’s not too bad. May want to evaluate your position. I think increased flexibility through stretching/yoga/pilates would also help. Also, I believe tight hip flexors are the cause of a lot injuries. Start on working to improve flexibility there.
you know funnily enough just got a new bike 2 months ago and its been since about then…I put it down to the extra mileage but its probably the fit.Ill take it in next week get it done properly.Tx.
Don’t pay $30 for a TP massage ball, a lacrosse ball from Dick’s works exactly the same, and it’s $2

.
I got rid of mine is short order by using a combination of a ball, and fashioning something very similar to this www.sacrowedgy.com
.
Hey the TP Ball is 25 bucks and you get a DVD with it as well. I think their website is awesome. I had piriformis problems before IM in Placid and the ball did wonders.
Got the education on how to use it from the website while I was there.
www.tpmassageball.com
Anyway I’d pay for the education any day plus the ball really feels like a hand…a Lacrosse ball doesn’t.
wedgy thing is cool as well…
My two cents
I just rub peanut butter and down a few penicillin tabs thei tching stops almost immediately
