I recently switched to a Pioneer 2-sided PM and I’ve noticed that (I think) my average power and NP for rides are lower than with my old Quarq, particularly on rides with high VI (i.e. road rides), maybe 10-15% lower. (all measured via Garmin head units, various models)
I saw some folks mention this on dcrainmaker but the thread seemed to have died off.
Anyone else experience something similar? If so, did you fix it via firmware or recalibration, or just reset to a lower FTP?
I made the switch to Pioneer over the winter on all my bikes and I noticed the same. I calibrated my FTP with the lower readings and train to that number now.
will say that for the same gear/cadence/RPE, all three Pioneer PMs read within a few watts of each other. This was tested on my rollers to rule out factors beyond my control.
I swapped from a Stages to a Pioneer, and actually noticed the Pioneer read a little higher. I then had the left side power meter go out and had to send it back to Pioneer for replacement, and I’ve since gotten an SRM and sold the Pioneer.
The pioneer seems consistent wrt itself. 200 watts feels the same on it all the time.
My problem is my quarq and my CT are close, and I don’t want to have to have different FTP per bike/trainer.
Do you remember how much lower (approx) it was reading compared to your other bikes? I’m estimating 10-15%, consistently.
Get rid of it. Consistent with respect to itself means nothing if you have or every plan to have any other power meter. 10-15% is ridiculous and inexcusable. Sell the thing and get a power2max or another Quarq.
For these types of power meter specific questions or for guidance on manual/static torque calibration procedures, the wattage forum is a better resource than ST. Worth joining up with them too and asking about this issue.
