We have a week-long family trip to Pinehurst coming up this April. Anyone have any suggestions on good swim, bike, or run options?
Awesome golf course…
No suggestions for swimming, I swim at the FT Bragg pools.
But the bike and run options are almost endless.
lots of rural highways and routes without too many good ole boy pick’emup trucks. From downtown pinehurst you can do a 10-15 drive to the corner of the Ft bragg reservation and ride around the outer perimeter of the drop zones and impact areas without having to go thru security.
some strip maps and directions at: www.fats.org local club
www.setupevents.com will give you some locations of local races - great end of season oly in pinehurst
Jim
Swimming: FirstHealth Fitness Center (YMCA type facility) has a 25 yard pool that is nice and really the only place that I know of to swim (I swim here); depending on where you are staying they may have an arrangement with FirstHealth to use the facilities
Riding: check out Rainbow Cycles in Southern Pines, they have daily rides and weekend rides, also check the set-up events web site and look at the Pinehurst Olympic Triathlon. The course maps are here. It is a rolling hills bike course and a rolling hills run course
Running: there are a couple local greenways and the roads are not heavily traveled
Overall, a great place to train and live. Send me a pm closer to April and if I’m around I’d be happy to go riding, running, and swimming.
Roger
Thanks for the info, everyone.
Pinehurst North carolina is an awesome place for biking at that time of year. I am going with a group last week in March first week in April. It is a favourite place for people from Ottawa. You will love it and there are lots of places to bike. One of the most straightforward from Pinehurst is probably down Foxfire road (I think that is where the traithlon is).
I need a century route in Pinehurst. Or a 50 mile loop we can ride twice. Any suggestions? The mapmyride and Rainbow Cycles routes are all in the 30 mile range.

I havn’t ridden this route, but found it on a local list. As stated previously in the thread, great area to ride so this should be good. I’ve done the Oly out there in October. Great race.
Ah and It also has a cue sheet.

Thank you very much.
try looking at this with google maps. southern pines to carthage to cameron to johnsonville to Vass. main roads invovled are rt 22, 24/27 and 690 and vass-carthage rd out of Vass. not a lot of cars, lots of places to fill up on water etc.
we live near spout springs off of 87 and I do 90% of my long rides in that area
Rainbow Cycles in Southern pines have several routes marked on the road with coloured arrows. They have the maps to go with the routes too. One route is “The Tour De Moore” - approx. 160-170Km. Really great route. You’ll love it. Can adapt it and start from Punehurst.
the pool at First Health is like a bathtub. RIDICULOUSLY warm for all the old retirees and the aqua aerobics classes. could not swim laps there for longer than 500 yards.
other than that, its a nice club.
