About 1 week ago I awoke with a pinched nerve or bulging disc on the right side of my neck. As a result, I have pain which radiates down my right shoulder and arm. Due to this pain, I have trouble turning my neck, especially in the morning, until it loosens a bit. The worst part is that I have had little sleep over the last 5 days.
Can anyone with medical knowledge (doctors) or experience recommend some therapy? Do I just have to wait for it to correct itself? If surgery is the answer, how long is the recovery and will the surgery limit my ability to train in the future?
Thanks.
Go see a chiropractor. They deal with this all the time. Don’t even think of surgery before trying a more conservative approach. Very few people need to go under the knife for this type of problem.
I had the same thing earlier this year. I went to a physical therapist. The process involved being placed in traction with heat on the affected area. After the traction was over the therapist did a deep tissue massage of the area. I also did various isometric exercises to strengthen the neck muscles. The whole thing took about 3 months. During that time I was not allowed to run because the jarring effect exacerbated the problem.
You may want to go to your regular doctor to see if an MRI can pinpoint the exact location and severity of the bulging.

Ditto Chiropractor…much quicker than PT…unless of course it doesnt work…then try PT.
After you’ve done SAC’s trials, and are hurting worse, go to a good chiropractor, ask around. They can get the MRI if necessary.
