Okay all you U.S triathletes I would like to know where you think would be a good training base in the U.S for next winter.I don't want to freeze my ass off like I did in Penticton last winter and want somewhere warm and near a beach so I can get back to some ocean swim and beach run training again.Let me know if you all can help me find a cool and laid back tri-community as I'm in the process of planning what to do after my season ends in late November.
San Diego would be the best.
tucson is nice, cheaper than SD. Great riding.
A legitimate question to the ST community, because I haven’t been down there in quite a while, but what about FL??? Is the standard of living for the $ still really, really good?
Looking at the map, I would say that Sarasota or Naples would be really good, but that’s just me guessing…
I have always thought that frorida is a cool place to race, but there isnt really any hills or elevation for the most part.
I thought about Florida and the whole Gulf Coast just for something different.Might be fun to hang at the beach and work on the swim/run thing for a few months.I'd like to help some newbies and slower Iron people with some fun,old-school training.Smackdown training and B.B.Q's.Now that's the way to spend the off season.I do have a brother in Austin but this black sheep doesn't want to freeload too much.
No - I absolutely agree…FL offers the least path of resistance elevation wise, but as far as $$$ goes … ?
Normann and Michellie train in the San Diego area, if its good for them, why not you?
I have nothing against SD but I'm just checking out all other options. The value for money thing is important to me as I'm not sponsored like the pros and I doubt that will have the same welcome mat rolled out for me as someone who has a high profile in the sport.Just looking for a cool,laid-back place to train and a friendly tri community to hang with.
Xantusia!
Xantusia!
I was willing to offer my services as cabana-boy for the Xantusia girls camp but as usual the girls shot me down in flames.
Ladies,I am available for 2008
austin is a lot of fun!!! i will be somewhere also in the winter…not sure where? i would like to go see the slowman monty place… not sure where i can set my tent? do they have a big backyard??? is there really big bears down there???
tuscon AZ is amazing riding… Las cruces, NM is great also but it s a bit quiet!!!
Las cruces, NM is great also but it s a bit quiet!!!
Ha,Ha.No way can it be as quiet as Penticton in the winter. My god, they roll up the sidewalks in this place the first week in October and nobody comes out to play until April.
I will have to agree with Johnyyo – I have lived in Las Cruces for a little bit, and I imagine that i f you could find yourself approaching 30mph on a downhill area, then the cops might flag you down because they have absolutlely nothing to do.
Santa Monica:
ou have beach
you have mtns for climbing
and trains to run in.
Las Cruces sucks man. If you are going to NM, Albuquerque has way better riding and running.
I can give a good view point on both florida and san diego. I lived in florida my entire life up until a few months ago. Yes, you can get a lot for your money there, except naples area. A few problems with florida. The biggest, it is not a training friendly state. I’ve been all over the state and I have yet to find an area that really encourages a healthy lifestyle. Panama City beach area has to be the best in the state though. Still not that good though. I lived in east central florida, cape canaveral/cocoa beach area, for most of my life. It sucks there for cycling. No bike lanes, nothing like san diego area.
As for san diego, well, I moved here 5 months ago with the idea of maybe staying for 6 months or so at most. My house in Florida is up for sale. I have no idea when, if ever I’ll go home. Cost of living is higher here. But, I don’t think its that dramatically higher. The training is a million times better. Plenty of good places to ride, tons of fast people to train with. Heck, if you and JonnyO need a place to stay this winter, let me know. My lease will be up by then, maybe I’ll look at getting something bigger. I am working on cutting my work schedule down to 4 days a week this winter anyhow.
Austin is pretty cold in the winter (unless you are comparing it to Canada). It wouldn’t be my choice to train here all winter… although, the running is great and the city is lots of fun.
well, maybe you are spoil or something but to say Las Cruces suck dosnt make much sence.
me and sergio had our last few trainign camp there and we swim in a amazing 50m pool 3 minutes from our place, tons of trails… and quiet road to ride… only problem is lack of major climbs… but to say it sucks??? i guess you must be use to very high standars???
Las Cruces sucks man. If you are going to NM, Albuquerque has way better riding and running.
You’re right, it sucks. Also there’s construction on I-25 around T or C, so it’s impossible to get here coming from Albuquerque.
See you at the races.
