A tree my campers love to climb:

A cruise ship in the distance. The cruise-ees are annoying but they bring a lot of money to the island and that is good.

A trellis in Agamont Park, which overlooks the Town Pier in Bar Harbor.

One of my swim spots: Ike’s Point on Echo Lake. I went in the water briefly yesterday.

A private pier in Southwest Harbor:

Looking out over Southwest Harbor:

I don’t know if people do this in other parts of the country, but in Maine it’s not uncommon to see people set up farm stands on the side of the road. The “stand” is usually the back of a truck. On the coast, it’s not just veggies, but also fish, lobster, scallops, etc. I think that most of their customers are people who are here camping.

Another swim spot: Long Pond. I loved taking the campers here in the mornings. Tourist traffic - there’s a kayak/canoe rental place nearby - picked up around 10 am. They could launch from the dock you see in the photo. I usually kept the kids from running and cannonballing when a tourist-canoe was launching or approaching the dock. I got enough entertainment watching them hold canoe and kayak paddles the wrong way. Canoe: T grip. Kayak: the scoop part points backward. Anyway, this is just an awesome spot to lifeguard.

Same dock, different view. Can you tell I LOVE this place? This is the spot I miss most about camp… wake up, train, go to work in my swimsuit, drink coffee and get a tan while the kids are swimming, jump in when I get too warm. We also had canoes of our own stored here so while some kids were swimming, I sent other kids out in boats. Let the record state that my kids know exactly how to paddle a canoe.

Section of the Oak Hill Road (Somesville). Riding on the backside is very, very pretty, but there’s no shoulder and people drive FAST so I don’t do it often.
Trivia: the island only has TWO stoplights. There is one at the head of the island, and one in Somesville.

Another section of road headed toward Pretty Marsh (where the Pretty Martians live) and the backside of the island.

Somes Pond: a little swim spot that is a bit hidden. Somehow Outside magazine found it and photographed 2 people on this rock - the photo was in their Sept. issue, I think. The rock is actually in the middle-ish of the pond, though you couldn’t tell that from the picture.

Really pretty leaves looking over Somes Pond

More Somes Pond trees:

We have pretty roads. Lots of them.
