I know it is training in the hot season when drinking pickle juice tastes so awesome.
Does anyone else do this?
Perhaps I am just weird.

Couple of people have done Ultraman out here using pickle juice. Never tried the stuff myself and not about to.
If I’ve been working out side in really hot weather, whether yard work or training and there is some type of cold salty pickle brine in any type of jar nearby I’m sure to down it like it was a magical potion created to aliveate my parched condition.
you are not weird. pickle juice is awesome. even more so when it’s over 100 degrees.
I think its a great idea esp if you are in the M 50-54 AG and I am racing.
Ask Cassidy @ TP Massage Ball about Pickle Juice at IM. When I saw him he looked green as a pickle.
OK. I don’t get it. Is it good for me, or bad? Some reference racing with it some think it bad.
I just thought it tastes good. I assume it is because I need salt or something. Am I hurting myself?
its great stuff for fighting off or preventing cramps.
in the heat, the salt is perfect for replenishing electrolytes and there’s something about the vinegar that makes cramps stay or go away.
i drink it a lot in the heat and I have it in transition or my special needs during hot races.
freeze it the night before…hot pickle juice is not the best.
Does anyone else do this?
Not when I can have a V8 instead, a mainstay of any ultracycling event.
It is just vinegar and lots of salt. Might be a bit too concentrated for some people, I hope you guys are drinking that crap cold. I have known people that drank the juice and threw out the pickles. What ever floats your boat. But it ain’t a new wonder food me thinks
I would rather have cramps.
I have used it in T2 all season and have had no more cramps coming off the bike. Dill pickle juice is the flavour I like the best. Generally a mouthful. But I haven’t used it in training.
Oh, if only there was a shred of medical evidence that electrolytes or hydration was connected to cramps, but there’s only anecdotal. Gotta believe Schwellnus (1997) is on track to finally figure it out for us crampers…

No, you aren’t hurting yourself. There was a recent study about the effects of pickle juice on decramping, something about how quickly the brine acts to stop a cramp, sorta like how your pee smells like asparagus within 5 minutes of eating one.
yes, I believe that it is assumed to be a neurological thing for pickle juice and the vinegar, and less an electrolyte issue.
Yep, I use it. Pickle Juice Sport is a bit too watered down for me. I like the stuff straight out of the Best Maid pickle jar. I’ll fill a gel flask with it and sip on it during a long ride or during a long race.

I’ve never heard of drinking pickle juice in hot weather. I love pickles, so I might try it. I’m sure the sodium and vinegar are good for a person after a hot workout.
I learn the most interesting things here on ST!
I’ve chugged it down to “pregame” some heavy rides on a couple of mornings after imbibing a few too many the prior night. Followed with a couple bottles (of water) on the bike, and I felt human again by the time I got back home.
Not necessarily the strategy used across the board, but all that sodium seemed to help with rehydration. Desperate times, desperate measures.
i grew up on a farm and we poured pickle juice on our spinach. that was so good. or maybe anything was good b/c i was always hungry.
I drink it whenever it’s going to be hot. Before long training rides in Houston. Drank 2 bottles of it during IM Texas. Also at Hotter’n Hell 100 (where they market it heavily. Roughly 1600mg of sodium in a 15oz bottle. Absolutely great stuff.
