Photochromatic AND bifocal sunglasses - where to find

Having reached that age where I need a little help reading my Garmin, I am using bifocal (sun)glasses. I use them for every activity with clear or darker lenses.
I am a basically happy customer of dual eyewear of whom I own a SL2 Pro with clear and dark lenses. I use it for running and cycling and I replace the lens for the light conditions I am using them in.
Often however I would start my activity when it is still bright light and end up when it is getting dark.
It is not practical to switch lenses in the middle of a run or ride. I want to find a photochromatic (transition) lens that dynamically adapts to the light conditions but also offers a reading insert (bifocal with normal distance vision and insert for reading (+1.5) my Garmin).

So here come my questions:
Where can I find it? Who offers bifocal transition lenses?

Thanks for any hints.

any optometrist.

You are looking for progressive focus lenses with photochrom coating
wear 'em all the time and you have your reading and sunglasses on you at all times

Was thinking more of something non-custom. Don’t want to pay a fortune for it and get custom glasses made.
I am wondering why not Rudy for example or Smith or Dual eyewear not offer this.

Anybody know of a good brand who offers that?

Exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you very much.

You can also get them on e-bay for around $65

I hear you on the age related issues. I have an awesome solution in my Rudy Rydons with reader in the lens. That said, it’s not photo chromatic as you asked about. I do have 2 versions of photo chromatic from them however and they work really, really well. I have the clear and red versions in 2 separate models and HIGHLY recommend them, and Rudy is great for customer service in addition to supporting our sport so well. In fact, they offer really great discounts for USAT members (http://www.usatriathlon.org/membership-services/benefits/no-codes-member-discounts.aspx). To solve you issue, you may need RX versions, which they also do but I am not yet to that point. Here’s the link…http://www.e-rudy.com/en/products/filter/category/sunglasses/sub/rx-collection. I did just look, and they offer photo chromatic in a number of colors of lens. I would definitely check them out, as Rudy is an awesome company and has gone out of their way a number of times for me. At this time I have a pair on the way back after a quick reconditioning where they upgraded all of my components on an old pair for a very reasonable fee.

GO RUDY!!!

My wife is very far sighted. She can’t see the Garmin 910 on her wrist or bike without her glass. She can ride her bike and run fine. She can also swim and sight fine. She could probably even drive, but she would have no idea how fast she was going.

We went to our optometrist and explained the problem. She ended up with Oakley half jackets in bi-focal prescription with photochromatic lenses. It was no big deal because the Oakley frames take the lenses she needs. If she had wanted something else it would have been a problem, or could have been. He showed her the frames he could make work and what she wanted happened to be on the list.

We used her recent eye exam so all we did was purchase the glasses, which was not covered by insurance since we had used the insurance for her normal day to day glasses. Cost was just north of $600.

Obviously that set of glasses doesn’t get updated every 2 years like regular glasses.

Oakley made lenses like that for me.
They were proud of them though.

They are super. I had the distance point put high in them so when riding the TT bike I look through the right place on the lens.

Have you considered ‘stick on’ bifocals such as these? http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/bf34.html

They can be applied to any lens. I have them on my Oakley Radars, and even on my casual use sunglasses.

You just won the thread!

For us that have arrived at a point where we need help with our reading vision, these are awesome! They can be trimmed to fit the contoured edge of sunglasses, and even easily moved from one pair to another. Certainly beats paying big bucks for prescription lenses!

Tried them years ago. Cheap fix didn’t work for me.

These work fine for occasional use in dry and clean environments, but did not hold up long term under heavy use (sweat, dirt and frequent cleaning…).

I’ve been using these on my Radars for over two years. I haven’t had any issues, and for the first year, moved them between three different lenses, and I have not had any issues at all. They certainly see a lot of sweaty, and dirty conditions.

When the glasses are off, you can see a couple of air bubbles, but when I am wearing them the air bubbles aren’t visible to me at all. I now have these on 3 Radar lenses, and on a pair of Oakley Gascan sunglasses.

For $15 it was worth a try, and for me has worked out wonderfully!
