Phelps is sometimes called "Gomer" by teammates?

In the past 12 yrs of following Mr Phelps, this the first I’ve heard of him being nicknamed “Gomer”…???

It certainly doesn’t appear to a very often used nickname, if it is indeed a nickname at all…???

I don’t have all day to read Michael Phelps’ impressive Wikipedia page, but I did peruse the piece from 2004 by Washington Post sports columnist, Sally Jenkins. She was writing about his teeth, which he surely now has the money and time to fix if he choses to do so.

Since she is better known on this forum as one of Lance Armstrong’s last friends in the media, I would take with a large grain of salt that she appears to be the only writer referring to this. Even if it his nickname in grade-school swim team was Gomer, I would imagine that the Ambassador of Swimming is addressed as Mr. Phelps now

Probably so but i found it interesting that the *Parade *magazine article (Reference #4 or 5 in the Wiki article) also mentioned the Gomer bit, but then both of these arts were from back in 2004, and prob Michael made it clear that he did not like that nickname. Only reason I posted this was in case some of the former elite swimmers on the forum might have heard about this nickname back in the '00 to '04 time frame. I’ve heard some incredible anecdotes from ajthomas, tallswimmer, real AB, JasoninHalifax, SH, STP, govols, and some others.

I refer to him as The Big Goof…

Love that dude.

But do you call him that in person, or is “The Big Goof” just your affectionate nickname for him??? Inquiring minds want to know.

What’s wrong with his teeth? He has the Gomer look to him so I think the nickname fits. Would like to know what they call Lochte
