any fans out there or critics? i know its expensive compared to accelerade but have read/heard some good things for recovery.
It’s expensive because it’s designed for children who are medically dehydrated - it was never designed as a sports beverage.
I’ve never tried it, but from the bottle it appears to be pretty viscous… seems nasty.
What are you trying to accomplish here?
i understand what it is “designed” for but it is falling into the hands of many pro/collegiate athletes as a recovery drink because it contains much less sugar than a gatorade type product. supposed to both be much better on your kidneys and hyrdrate more quickly with less bad carbs
Good stuff, I use it, or the Walmart house brand of it. Not so much a recovery drink, but usually the day before a big race to hydrate myself. One bottle usually does the trick.
NUUN, Zym, and G2 all fit that bill as well.
If you want to try it, knock yourself out. You won’t hurt yourself with it.
not for sports nutrition, but rather to keep myself from dying due to a bout of food poisoning, i’ve used the gatorale “propel” beverage - seemed to be more or less the same type of thing (nutrients in a low-sugar water solution), with a mild taste that didn’t upset my stomach when i couldn’t handle anything but tiny sips of water without puking. much cheaper and generally easier to find than pedialyte.
cheers!

Pedialyte is not viscous and, while it is low calorie, it has more electrolytes than NUUN, Zym and much more than G2. It has about as many calories as G2 and NUUN and Zym have none. It has 2.5% glucose and about 50% more electrolytes than Gatorade endurance, which has twice as much as Gatorade or G2 and 5-6 times as much as Propel. I like to take an 8 oz bottle out with me on the run on a hot sprint or Oly. It has a very low osmolar load and is quite rapidly absorbed. It is probably not the best for longer distance tris as the calories are so low, but I did slug down one each at the start of the run at IMAZ and Kona in '07 since I had let myself get a little dry on both occasions. Drinking a Gatorade or my higher calorie InfiniT at that point would likely have upset my stomach. I did use the InfiniT for the rest of the run at both.
DO NOT BUY THE ORANGE COLORED FLAVOR, called fruit. It is disgusting.
I have used PediaLyte in the past because it doesn’t have any fructose or high-fructose in it. Dextrose (glucose) is very easy on the gut, so there isn’t the tendency to bloat. My only complaints are that it’s not super portable and it’s more expensive.
If you are actually Amy Acuff, the Olympian high jumper, I’d just like to say welcome to the forum!

Tried it once, nastiest tasting crap I ever tried to choke down. Don’t know how you get kids to actually drink this stuff. But then again some people actually develop a taste for Scotch so I guess there’s some athletes out there sucking it down by the gallon because it is actually suppose to be good for you.

I drink Pediasure during any runs that go over 20 miles. A friend who does distance cycling drinks Ensure during the races. You’ll see such liquids drank during ultra marathons by some runners as well.

Haven’t tried the Ensure yet but it seems like it would be a bit heavy during races. But I’ve never done an ultra so I guess at that distance the intensity is low enough to be able to digest it.

It’s great to replenish the fluids after a night of drinking tequilla. So I’ve heard. I have no first hand experience with being in that condition…
A guy from St Paul is doing the RAAM and runs an endurance athlete coaching site. It sounds like he’s planning on doing a bulk of it on Ensure and fig newtons…

Vitalyte, used to be Gookinaid, is a lighter sports drink that started as a rehydration mix like pedialyte. I think it is easier to drink than things like Gatoraid when going hard and costs less (at least at REI). Nuun may be on the same order, but I have not tried it.

x2, but it is formulated for young children, they perceive taste differently than an adult does.
Did you try it when you were or weren’t exercising? Your sense of taste sharpens acutely during exercise.

Why do you feel that Gatorade has bad Carbs?
What do you feel are good Carbs?

Pedialyte is sooo 90’s.
If you do want to drink it, mix it 1/2 and 1/2 with water (it will taste less nasty). The WalMart brand is cheaper. I used to drink this years ago on the way to/ after really hot stage races (road biking).
BUT
There are better sport specific products out there now. To prevent cramping try SaltStick.com they work, period. Depending on your size/ heat/ humidity take 1-3 of these an hour with your favorite carbo drink (also see how much electrolyte it has).
The only scenario that I could see where it would be justified to take pedialyte is if you lost all your nutrition before some hot race and could find nothing else. But even then, just ask around transition and borrow something.

for a cheaper nastier tasting solution (old skool crazy) just get IV bags and drink those. Everything you need and they’re usually $1-2 a bag - this is what I did the last 2 days of RAAM. Drink 'em slow or you might end up barfing… that it the opposite of hydrating.
Works great, you’ll never cramp.
Let me know how this one goes.
IV bags of what? Ringers? Sodium? Glucose?
