Pedialyte

does anyone use this? how is it?

yeah, when I get diarrhea - my mom’s remedy. It’s not bad and I’ve always wondered if it’s not also marketed under another name as a sports drink.

That’s for children, if you really wanna use something similar, go for gastrolyte. Basically a balanced electrolyte drink that enhances hydration minus the sugars in gatorade that can cause further diarrhea.

thanks. i have heard of people taking this during endurance events. I know Dean Karnazes has used it during his 200mile treks.

It tastes awful, although in the popsicle version you can choke it down. I tried to give some to my 2 year old when she was sick and she took one sip and started crying. Then I took a sip and I almost started crying as well.

its just gatorade for sick and dehydrated children. if you’re an adult, drink gatorade. and it tastes better…

My kid uses “Pedialyte” sporadicaly in some particular races, but not all types of this product is for children. In México we have at least four types and they are quite different in the formulation:

Pedialyte, Pedialyte SR45, Pedialyte SR90 and Pedialyte fos, (Includes indigestible, highly fermentable carbohydrates)

I am not sure if the SRs and fos version is available in the USA, but I would not use anything but normal Pedialyte (the Mexican version) for hydration when racing or training.

Uh! no. the old Stokely Van Kamps Gatorade was VERY similar to Gatorade, but the current version has too much sugar and not enough salt for diarrrhea and vomiting.

I drink some before Olys and sprints and I take some on the run. It is MUCH more rapidly absorbed than Gatorade since it has more salts and less sugar, but the sugar is glucose and only around 2.5%, so it gets in in a hurry, but it doesn’t have many calories, which limits its value for longer events.

the apple, grape and cherry are pretty tolerable. the one called ‘Fruit’ is just plain disgusting and nauseating. I made every employee in my office taste it, so they would NEVER give or recommend it to ANYONE.
