Pedal survey

I’m curious, has this been asked recently? Who uses what, why, and does it make a difference or is it just personal preference? I have used Speedplay and Look on road and SPD on my Mt. Bike. The latter mostly because they were cheaper, however, I seem to prefer Look these days.

Don’t know why (mostly because I haven’t spent a lot of time on anything but I suppose) but I am/have been/always will be a Look pedal guy. There are other lighter, more aero, better clearance pedals but I just seem to like them. Been riding them since they came out forever ago and I don’t think I’ll ever change.

Me too. I’ve thought about changing but I don’t have any real complaints about Look. I waffle between the Speedplay Zeros and the Ultegra version of the Lance pedal.

Speedplay X1’s on the race bike, X2’s on the road bike, SPD’s on mtn. and cross bikes.

I had DA SPD’s on my first road bike, but when I got into tris, Speedplay was all the rage.

I’ve had just about the entire spectrum: from toe clips, to Looks, to Times, to Speedplays to SPDs and to me with the exception of toe clips, pedals are pedals. Pick the ones that you like and forget about them.

My race bike has Speedplay X-2’s and my commuter/trainer has SPDs.

I think the new Shimano road pedals come close enough that I might be convinced to give them a try. Not even interested in the Speedplay bandwagon.

I have used Look and currently use Campy, which I love. Big platform, good float but not too much, and cool looking.

I use Speedplay Zero’s and have always liked them very much.

Been using the Shimano 7750s from last year and absolutely love them. I don’t feel the need to pony up more cash for the 7800s for this year, though. I got turned off by the Speedplay pedals after a buddy of mine started having problems with his feet after riding them.
It’s like everything else out there, try a few different types out from your buddies and then make a purchase.

I use the Ultegra “Lance” pedal. Aside from a stange ticking noise that started two weeks after I got them, lasted for 1 ride, then disappeared, they are pretty good from a fit perspective - a lot like my Looks. There are two things that work in Shimano’s favor, though:

  1. The cleats are just plain superior. They have rubber feet on them so you and actually walk on them without sliding around or scratching a wood floor.

  2. The have yet to squeak.

On my training bike I just have a set of genaric spd’s. My MTB has Cannondale spd’s and on my race bike I use an old set of Sampson titanium spindle pedals.

I race duathlons and use Pyro platform pedals and I like how much surface area the sampsons have, its a good interface betweem them and the pyro’s.

This thread might help as well.

I use SPD’s on both of my bikes for convenience, since I use the same shoes for them. I use the 646 platform SPD’s on my MTB, and the 515’s on my road bike. Oh, also, I’m cheap and the 515’s came with the bike. Interestingly, I also have a pair of 858’s on my spinning bike(they started out on my MTB, but I kept trashing myself trying to get out of them on the tricky bits), and I can’t seem to tell the difference between the top-of-the-line Shimano and the low end ones, except that the 858’s are a lot more beat up than the 515’s.
