Over the last couple of months I have been annoyed by a little soreness covering the back of my knee. Usually stretching would alleviate it and if that didn’t it would go away about a mile into my run. But last week I finished an 8 mile run with a half mile sprint. Since that time it has been worse. Roller therapy and stretching will alleviate it for a while but it comes back in a couple of hours. I haven’t done any acitivty since that run so I do not know how being warmed up would affect it. It isn’t a debilitating pain since I did increase my milage from three miles to nine on my runs and my bike rides from 20 - 37 without any issued. But it sure is an annoyance that has gotten worse. It seems to be worse in the morning. I was going to start back up since I have an olympic race in 5 weeks. So my question is, have any of you experienced this? I tried searching but cannot find anything. What would you recommend?
is it in the rear outside part of the knee just above the joint next to that thick tendon? If so, I could be a tight hamstring issue. At least it was with me.
If its a PCL, you would very likely know. I tore mine playing hockey in high school. It was fine skating of the ice but then I tried to sit down I about jumped 5 feet off the bench it hurt so bad. Id go see a doctor for it. You can diagnose a PCL in about 2 mins.
That said I can do tris without it bein repaired ever so you never know. But a PCL is very uncommon, and normally only with direct trauma. I.e hitting the dashboard with your knee in a car wreck or landing straight on the front of it with you need flexed which is what I did in hockey.
PCL injuries are from an acute trauma, such as a dashboard injury or landing directly on a bent knee. This sounds like an overuse injury that will likely respond to Physical Therapy.
The pain source seems to be the middle of the back of the knee just above the where the calf connects to the joint. Hamstring was what I first suspected. All back pain I ever experienced in my powerlifting days were caused by tight hamstrings so I’ve always put a little effort into keeping them from getting too tight. Hamstring stretches were the most effective prior to last week. Maybe I should dedicate even more focus to it. It definitely isn’t debilitating. My main concern was that it doesn’t get to that point. I also find the more I think about it, the more sore it seems. So maybe I’m making it out to be more than it is.
There is a ton of stuff that is in the area you are talking about. Not just your hamstring attachment and PCL. Also, just because it hurts their doesn’t mean the problem is there also. Especially when you are talking about something like a PCL. Trust me when mine hurts, its not the back, its the whole knee. That’s the way its been every since I hurt it. The ligament is so small it would be impossible to tell if that is what hurts just by running and walking around.
Mine was definitely debilitating. It felt like someone was stabbing the back of my knees with an ice pick when I ran. I regular hamstring stretching routine has fixed it.

wont be PCL… as mentioned before it is an acute mechanism of injury that cause PCL issues… yours will be a gastroc or hams insertion, or a post capsular origin to pain, such as a strain, or bakers cyst…

I was going to say this too, I had this a few years ago, it would get tighter and tighter and feel like it was going to pop or something, a few minutes of stretching would clear it up, it lasted a month or so and went away on its own, as most aches and pains from running do IME.
Are you riding your bike? Is the saddle to high?
Well, that was back in 2007/2008, during my IM days so yeah, I was on the bike quite a bit at the time, seat coud have been a bit high, but I had a buddy who was a real bike fitter who hooked me up.
These days, im not too sure about bike fit, I fit myself as I dont even know where Id get a real bike fit in China, but im not even thinking about an IM or even a HIM, so my bike sessions are limited to 1 hour long suffer fests (average maybe 3.5 hours a week) so I dont feel like im on the bike enough to get hurt from a bad fit.
