I looked up the Canadian Qualifying standards and did not find that stipulation.
Not to derail thread too much, but then lionel has a chance for the olympic spot too. Regardless, +1 vote for Puala to go for the olympics!
I don’t see him beating Derek Gee. As for Findlay, she could definitely make it, she was Olympian in triathlon so not sure if she is interested in targeting.
Would he have to though? Not that team Canada would want to do this, but couldn’t he finish third and still be eligible?
Paula is in another category. She won Nationals, twice and I suspect they won’t even pick her
As I said earlier - there are restrictions at both the World Championships via the UCI and at the Olympics, mostly by the IOC upon the UCI, of numbers of personal that a Country can bring to these events in a sport discipline. In this case it’s “Road Cycling”. This DOES place Cycling Canada, in a bit of a tricky situation. They COULD choose Paula for the ITT, but assuming she will not contest the Road Race, then they will be down a body and a rider for the Road Race - an event where those extra team mates can be super helpful. I don’t envy the Selection Committee.
On the men’s side it’s WAY easier. Derek Gee get’s the nod, for the ITT, and he will race the Road Race, and also very possibly race on the Track ( Track Cycling a different discipline) as well (Team Pursuit and/or the Points or Scratch Race). And NONE of that would be in any sort of dispute!

With his Giro success and the Champ’s jersey there is no justifying.
Hugo didn’t do champs since Tokyo because he is doing that pesky race in France where he won a stage.
I am not sure who I would put my money on for a Hugo/Derek race. Let’s not forget Hugo got 13th in Tokyo.
If I were cycling Canada I would go Hugo for the TT, Derek for Team Pursuit rather than Derek for both. But they haven’t called for my opinion.
I test our aerosensor a lot on the Parkway in Ottawa. I would see Matteo zinging by on his P5, up and down, up and down…I always thought to myself “you are an idiot, put it on his bike, pull out a lawn chair, crack open a beer …and collect data”. New strategy if they ban bottles in shirts…aero belly
So you have at least 4 guys better at TT and road candidates
Lionel could out TT Mike Woods, possibly Canada’s first pick for road
bingo.
imo current canadian tt hierarchy is something like
gee/houle
leonard
cote/dal-cin/zukowsky depending on day/course
a few years ago i’d have bet that roberge would be in there but he seems to have drifted into gravel as his focus.
anyways the youtube tri dude would have to work hard to crack that bottom level.
Spot on. Back on topic and away from fitness influencers. Paula has a better chance at a medal than the other women, so I hope she gets a spot to ride and I say that knowing she would keep someone else out of the road race.

To clarify, I’m not saying I believe she will trouble for a podium, but could be the best chance in her discipline for her country. That’s it. It would be a nice little Olympic redemption arc.
There are at least a dozen pro riders coming to that ITT who are extremely strong specialists who I’d worry about before her.
That Triathlon Life, Erik and Paula’s brand/youtube channel.
IMO she has no shot at a medal. Her biking is nowhere close to Knibb’s in triathlon, and Knibb missed the podium at the US nats.
So no medal chance just send 2nd best cyclist instead? I’m sure there is some pay for going
It’s the choice to send an additional domestique for the road race (who will also race the ITT).
as stated before with her previous ITU experience, she can fill the domestique role too
Don’t get me wrong, Paula is a phenomenal athlete and I’m sure if she dropped tri went all in on road cycling she could make a splash. But the notion that since she last raced ITU like 6 years ago (which has incredibly different demands from ITU riding) that she can kinda just walk into a domestique role over other world tour riders who live and breathe feels pretty disrespectful to amazing work that WT ladies do. There is a LOT that goes into being a good domestique besides good bike handling and a strong engine.

That would be a, “no”.
Road Racing is tough. You have to be able to ride in close confines for extended periods of time. You often have to take some risks. It is risky. You have to have a great deal of confidence! It takes a great deal of experience.
