Pants for winter commuting: slush/water/rain/snow proof

Anyone here know of a good pull over cycling pant for winter commuting in a city with actual winters/snow/ice etc?

I want something i can just pull over a pair of jeans that will keep me dry and relatively warm. Maybe something that zips down the leg?

something like this perhaps?

Any suggestions or reviews?

I just bought and got to use a pair of Marmot Precip pants. They have the male stripper design where they zip all the way from waist to cuff and will keep you dry. The lower leg is a little wide for cycling but I use a chainguard on my fixie and it hasn’t been a problem. They offer no warmth at all, they are purely lightweight rain paints. But they are easy on, easy off, and keep the rain out.

The 1st time I used them, I was wearing shorts and I was a little suprised how much a cold rain could be “felt” through the pants. Cold is probably relative though, I’m in Alabama and the temps had dropped from sunny high 70’s to rainy mid 50’s overnight.

I commuted in all weather for 7 years, and in the rain I found it was best to just carry clothes to change into at the end of the commute. Other than that, look for snow ski pants, the light weight ones. Many models zip all the way from the waist. I have some Mountain Hardwear ones I really like, but can’t find them on the web.

Everytime I would commute with shell pants over my real pants I would get the bottom of the pant legs wet anyway. The water just gets in there. I did have some success with rolling up the pant legs under the shell, but most of the time I would just wear tights or shorts depending on the weather, and change when I got to my destination in a restroom. Rolling your pants from the waist down before putting them in the bag leaves less wrinkles than folding them. There are a lot of good commuter bags out there, I like the roll top waterproof ones.

Good luck.
