Pairing Garmin Edge 500 and PowerTap Hub?

I have the PT 2.4 wireless (about 3 yrs old) and am trying to pair it with the new Garmin Edge 500. The manual isn’t too informative and there’s about a 40 min customer support wait on the Garmin website. Any suggestions/tips here? Thanks in advance.

From menu, select settings, select bike settings, bike 1, ANT+ power, scan. Make sure the hub is activated before starting.

Maybe I don’t know what I am talking about but I thought only the ANT+ hubs are compatable with the Edge 500. Those hubs are model 2009 and later.

Yes, but they can be “updated” to Ant+ protocol.

Flying Wombat has it. I have an Edge 500 and 2 different powertaps (training and race wheels). You only have to “pair” it once (the rescan procedure), then it will pair and work immediately once you start pedaling.

But you make a good point, the OP has hopefully updated his older hub to ANT+ via the thingie you “rent” from Cycleops.

I can’t seem to pair my PT SL+ hub. Menu>Settings>Bike Settings>Bike1(my only bike on the 500)>ANT+ Power> Then I hit Rescan optionand it just backs out to the previous menu. I pedal and pedal and nothing happens. I know my PT batteries are good.

Your PT SL hub probably isn’t ANT+. I had this problem with my 2008 2.4 wireless hub. I had to buy the ANT+ updater. I have an updater with presumed 1 update left if anyone wants to try it out. It has been used twice, but rumor is that it will work 3 times. Let me know. We can work out a deal of some sort.

Where do you get the ANT updater and what did it cost?..I need to obviously update a wireless PT that I’ve had for at least 5 years…would be interested in working something out with you…please let me know…Thanks
.

if you have an edge and the 910xt wrist garmin can both garmin’s pull the data from the powertap? i just use the edge to display the data but i load all my workouts using my 910xt

no problems, the hub simply broadcasts its data, it has little to no idea where the data goes.

the pairing process as I understand it simply informs the garmin unit which powertap ID to listen to.

I have a 910, an edge500 and an edge 705, all 3 will simultaneously display the PT data. ( no I don’t run all 3 together normally, :p)

Make sure your PT is in fact ANT+ and if you’re still having an issue, check the battery.

You order it from Saris, it’s $120 (roughly)to update to ANT+. When you’re done you send the module back and they send you a t-shirt.

Here’s what the ANT+ updater looks like. $99 at Saris and I’m sure Amazon has it too http://www.cycleops.com/products/accessories.html?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_images_norating.tpl&product_id=179&category_id=8
