Painting an aero helmet. Good idea? And How to?

I recently bought an LG Chrono aero helmet. It has the basic and boring flat silver color. I would like to do a custom paint job on it to match it with the stock paint on a 2011 Felt B10 (http://2011.feltracing.com/USA/2011/TT-TRI/TT-TRI-Series/B10.aspx).

I have two questions:

(1) will applying a custom paint job, assuming it’s done correctly, detract from the aero profile/benefit of the helmet. Obviously id rather be fast than look good.

(2) If I can paint the helmet, how do I go about painting it so it looks good and still retains aero benefit. Any tutorials available? Any special equipment I need?

I’ve done a few. Patience is key. Sand down. Apply light coats of primer. Then spray paint light layers. Youtube has great tutorials.

I used paint markers for the teeth and eyes.

I took the stickers off, sanded primed and used multiple coats of krylon spray paint that is meant for plastic. http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion-for-plastic/

The teeth and eyes are vinyl decals meant for a flying tiger RC plane.

I am getting a Giro Air Attack and am thinking of doing it orange.

As cool as it might be… painting your helmet, much like painting your bike, can void the warranty and the paint solvents could in fact cause the padding underneath to separate from the shell, or the shell could become brittle. The biggest issue I see with it is that your helmet might be disallowed at any race where the marshal decides that your modification makes the helmet potentially unsafe. You can probably dodge this by only using decals and not doing anything to scuff or otherwise alter the overall surface of the helmet.

really?

Sweet helmets! Did you do those yourself?

no thats Crowie’s various helmets and i think Chrissie in the last one. Just pointing out that the pros helmets are painted for sponsors all the time without getting DQ’d

I believe that is Natasha Bodman
.

I see, good point. Yeah I am not concerned with warranty or getting DQed. Seeing that others do this and have no issues, I’m not concerned. And if I do it well, it will look professionally done! The warranty expired some time ago, so thats not an issue.

I’m excited to paint it. Just need to come up with a cool design to match my Felt.

ahh probably right.

Air brush decals some good painters tape you can do whatever you want. Sc_nick on here does some nice stuff. Did a few for me. Not expensive at all.

You might be able to get some ideas by looking at pictures of ice hockey goalie masks. Some of them get rather complex with their paint jobs these days.
