(1) will applying a custom paint job, assuming it’s done correctly, detract from the aero profile/benefit of the helmet. Obviously id rather be fast than look good.
(2) If I can paint the helmet, how do I go about painting it so it looks good and still retains aero benefit. Any tutorials available? Any special equipment I need?
As cool as it might be… painting your helmet, much like painting your bike, can void the warranty and the paint solvents could in fact cause the padding underneath to separate from the shell, or the shell could become brittle. The biggest issue I see with it is that your helmet might be disallowed at any race where the marshal decides that your modification makes the helmet potentially unsafe. You can probably dodge this by only using decals and not doing anything to scuff or otherwise alter the overall surface of the helmet.
no thats Crowie’s various helmets and i think Chrissie in the last one. Just pointing out that the pros helmets are painted for sponsors all the time without getting DQ’d
I see, good point. Yeah I am not concerned with warranty or getting DQed. Seeing that others do this and have no issues, I’m not concerned. And if I do it well, it will look professionally done! The warranty expired some time ago, so thats not an issue.
I’m excited to paint it. Just need to come up with a cool design to match my Felt.
You might be able to get some ideas by looking at pictures of ice hockey goalie masks. Some of them get rather complex with their paint jobs these days.
