Painting 25 ft wall--help!

So me and my wife are moving into a new house and the great room needs a wall painted…I am a pretty good painter and would like to do it but…it is 25ft tall. I need to get up there and was wondering if the collective knowledge of ST could give me some ideas? I was thinking of buying a 22ft ladder–like those folding ones (that way I would keep it for other jobs around the house vs one that cannot fold up)…any other ideas welcomed!

I would get one from a rental place , and be done with it . I like the non-folding type , Unless your a tree trimmer , painter , contractor , It would be in the way more than being useful.

22 ft will not let you do a 25 ft wall with a reasonable measure of safety. It will be fully extended (and flexy) and you will be sticking off the top, extended and trying to cut in, balance paint and brush and yourself. Bad idea. Rent the right equipment.

Also, I assume you would want use a roller on a large flat surface–how would you manage that–up and down the ladder?

Hire a painter. Trust me.

If you insist on doing it yourself, do not buy cheap paint.

What about renting scaffolding. way more secure and safe than a ladder.

or just bring in the pros.

jesus, 25 ft?! that is huge.

first of all, how are you skills? are you really good at painting? do you have much experience?

if it’s something you’re good at, and you have experience, just rent the right equipment.

if not, then get a referral and watch over the guy to make sure he does it right.

(even if it’s the same price to hire as it is to rent the equipment, you may still prefer to do it yourself. my husband would…he’s a die hard do it yourselfer, very meticulous and the results are always fantastic)

If you insist on doing it yourself I would definitely go with scaffolding. I can only imagine what a PITA it would be with a ladder or a pole for that height.

I can tell you that most of the DIY’ers I know think twice about painting at those heights because by the time you factor in what it costs to rents scaffolding and buy paint and other supplies, it is pretty much a wash to hire someone to paint the room. I can totally understand the desire to do it yourself though. Let us know how you did!

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this, I am still debating it, and your thoughts make me think I should just suck it up and pay someone to do it–it just sucks b/c it is so easy except for the height! I like the scaffolding idea–it seems that by the time I get that set up, I should just pay someone to do it since to rent it would be just as expensive. Oh the details, the details! Thanks again!

Home Despot rents scaffolding pretty cheaply. We used it to paint our two story foyer. Super easy.
