Hey I need some RX advice, please. My left knee has kept me from running since May. I thought it was Pes Anserine Bursitus. 1 PT agreed, but treatment didnt help. The other thought meniscus, and so I got 20% removed in december. That is way higher up my knee than where Im hurting. I think I have narrowed it down to my semitendanosis? It is painful to the touch. I am down to upper body weight lifting only, as even swimming irratates it. Can you stretch that? Right below the Pes area I guess. I have iced the #%^## out of it for months with no real lasting relief. I hope someone out there has dealt with this successfully. Thanks
I really want to race this year. Im 47 and was getting faster. It sucks to be out.
Have done lots of hamstring stretches.
Had my super tight gracilis pelfed or something.(stripped)
Iced it a ton(probably singlehandedly ended global warming)
Surgery to meniscus was beneficial. (to surgeoun) j/k
I would have a trained eye (good ortho PT) look at extrinsic factors (foot mechanics, hip strength, etc), it may be biomechanical.
if you’ve had it nearly a year (chronic), then treatment is different compared to acute measures (ionto, icing, etc). Typically treat tendonosis conditions with eccentric strengthening, Transverse friction massage, and correction of any biomechanical problems, compared to ionto, stretching, icing, etc.
First thing that tends to go when we get older is our run. I can relate about I was getting faster, but at what price, not being able to run at all. So, I have cut my running back to 1 day a week. Using my powercranks on the trainer to build up the stuff I need for shorter running. At 53, running spend is less important compared to can one run at all. Best of luck, I am trying to fix a back issue that might end my racing.
One PT had me doing the eccentric strengthening excercises, that seemed to really piss it off. Its sore to the touch on the very end (last 3 inches) of the semitendanosis or membrenosis(not sure) .
Yesterday I tried some stretches for the semitendanosis. I basically was turning my left foot in. Then I remembered that for
some reason I cant turn my left foot in since childhood. One PT spotted that but never brought it up again. It makes me kick out of my pedals on the right side, because I cant kick out on the left. I swing my rt leg over and turn out to dismount.
Anyway the little stretching I was doing seemed to help. It led me here to ask if that muscle can be stretched, and if that might be giving me symptoms of Pes Anserine Tendonitus/Bursitus.
Thanks
All I can offer is that fish oil is supposed to be good in helping bursitis. I’ve a friend who is into homeopathy and has found it helpful in shoulder bursitis. n = 1 !
pertinax4,
I’m an orthopedic surgeon and its difficult to help from a distance. It seems that you first need a diagnosis. The advice to see a sportsmed doc or two was good. Especially if he/she is a runner. Maybe the surgeon who did your partial meniscectomy can help. Pain below the pes can be a stress fracture or stress reaction, but that probably would have healed by now. Periostitis (inflammation of the lining over the bone) is rare but usually easy to diagnose on MRI or bone scan and sometimes on X-ray. Perhaps taking a look at the MRI you had prior to the meniscectomy may help. Of course, the medial hamstrings can indeed be your problem but the usual treatments have failed (so far). Sometimes an injection of lidocaine (with or without cortisone) can help narrow down the diagnosis. I’m not a big fan of cortisone shots but they do have their place. I can’t think of anything else at the moment. Good luck.
