Pain behind knee...WTF? What is it? What do I do?

So…I recently started experiencing pain behind my left knee…right on the back of my knee. It hurts more when I completely extend my knee…it hurts more when I twist my knee to the side a little…and it hurts more if I sit idle for a while. It hurts less when I grit through the pain and just go for a short run.

There’s no swelling, redness, inflammation. And actually, the pain will totally disappear for a few hours at random…and then it’ll come back. Sometimes it hurts if I bend my knee all the way and flex my leg muscles.

What did I do to myself? I haven’t run the last two days 3 days (biked once though). And before that, I only ran very lightly since I first started experiencing pain.

Any insight?

Had the same years ago on my mtb. Went away after lowering the seat and different shoes.
No expert whatsoever but do you have any history of ACL / PCL problems?
I would have it checked out by a good knee specialist if it persists.

you think it’s from my bike? because i can’t even figure out what discipline caused this junk. maybe i’ll try lowering my seat. how long did it take for the pain to go away? btw…no history of acl/pcl problems.

just did a search and read through the first several threads on knee pain…all of them had different knee problems and none of theirs sound like mine…

I took several months off from biking due to other reasons.
When I got back, I replaced a pair of used up shoes and lowered my seat for some more control on the trails.
Since the pain didn’t come back I decided not to bring the seat back up again.
At the time of the injury I was solely mountainbiking, and I assumed I’d done something to my ACL or PCL.
I never found what the problem really was because it went away.

that’s pain on the front of the knee, just below or to either side…accompanied by grinding noice…and swelling. mine is behind the knee…no swelling…no grinding noise. :frowning:

Have the same…dropped the seat, went easy for a couple rides. Felt better…not a doctor.

i had pain develop at what seemed like the back/outside of my right leg last week during a long run. didn’t hurt cycling, though also no inflamation. did have reduced movement, which made me suspect alignment issue. went to the chiropractor, he said i had a leg length imbalance, stemming in my hip. those adjustments fixed the pain, motion in my knee initally, though it still bothered me now and again. finally thursday got one of those foam rollers for the IT band, first morning after, had to pop my hip back into place, was a nice big pop. relieved both the knee and hip pain though, and have been using the roller since. also had a deep tissue massage on the legs. now week plus 1 day, and both hip and knee feel a lot better. was interesting, cycling the day after, again no knee pain riding, but pain developed on the front of my shin, above my ankle. lasted till the chiro set my hip right.

interesting…so you and another poster found that the pain came from cycling. i wasn’t sure if the pain was from running or cycling. but i can buy that it’s cycling. i did raise my seat a bit earlier in the year. maybe it just took a month or two for my knee to start reacting with pain? i’ll try lowering the seat. in the meantime, i’m hoping this pain doesn’t last long. most aches and pains i get ast 24-48 hours…this has been lingering for more than that without much improvement…

I think it might be the nerve that runs down from the sacrailic joint down behind the knee. Try doing some stretching of the buttock, hams and calfs before and after your runs or bike rides. I had the same thing last year. It was only on the right leg. Stretching worked for me.

I never did quite track down the cause of my own issue, though it seems to have resolved itself. Occasionally it will bother me a little, usually after spending long amounts of times standing on very hard surfaces (e.g. tile or stone).

ahhhh! yes yes, that would be more accurate…back of the leg, where it bends. not like inside my kneecap or anything.

no swelling, no bulge, none of the odd feelings that i read about often associated with bakers cyst. though i also read that some people get bakers cyst without any symptoms at all…weird?

Anyway, still sounds like one - many people don’t have a lot of pain with them, but most do have some swelling

if it’s bakers, i’m like…screwed, right? meniscus tear!!! arthritis??? the underlying causes of bakers cyst sound terminal for a triathlete!!!

Nah, not screwed. Can be drained, removed, etc. Hopefully John Post will see the thread and comment as well. A good ultrasound (or MRI) can certainly rule this in/out after a good clinical exam - no substitute for “hands on”!
