I have this pain in the top of my right knee (right above my knee cap- more in the front than in the back of the knee) that just popped up about 2 weeks ago. It really only hurts when I bend my knee slightly with all my weight on it, or when I push off from the wall when I am swimming, or when I am climbing up a substantial hill on my bike. It doesn’t hurt when I run- in fact, I had a fantastic track work out yesterday without any pain at all. I do feel some pain when I am doing my resistance training program and doing lunges/step-ups. Only in my right knee. Any ideas on what it might be? I just got some new running shoes tonight with hopes that that might be the solution. I can always count on getting a nagging overuse injury of some sort when my shoes have too much mileage on them…
Any Tri-MD help out there?
Go to www.runnersworld.com and click on the injury prevention (or something like that) tab. They have five good articles on knee pain, with some treatment options. I have been ramping up my cycling and running too fast and had a scare last Sat on a long run with my left knee. Found the RW articles to be helpful. So this past week I have been trying everything their articles said to do and it seems to feel better.
Good luck
Is your seat too high on your bike? I’m not joking, too much knee extension typically results in a pain on the top of the knee cap.
Pain just above the knee cap is probably quadriceps tendinitis…rec: avoid workout components that make it hurt, i.e. bike spinning only, no climbing or grinding; quadriceps stretching program; antiinflammatories temp. for pain; warm up easy and longer than normal; ice pack on area after workout; probably not run hills, esp uphill until better (makes sense that track felt good b/c no hills)…hope this helps
