P5 Six Red - Loose Aero Bars

Just got a P5 Six Red. At the initial pick up from my LBS i noticed the aero bars (on the aduro) would wiggle vertically. On the first ride, was pushing it and went to switch to the brakes and the left bar twisted. Nearly wiped out but saved it. Took the bike back to the LBS. They said the tech hadn’t tightened them properly. Took it away and brought it back with the comment “to tighten them properly the nuts (around the aero bars) got a little damaged, but that’s normal”

That seemed pretty un-normal to but but they are a Cervelo dealer so I’ll go with it. Put the bike on the trainer (Kickr) for a ride and on the second ride noticed the same vertical looseness, then the ability to fairly easily twist the bars. Before I go back to the LBS (or perhaps another Cervelo dealer) has anyone else had this problem? I’m a bit frustrated that the nuts are scratched up and the aero bars are still loose.

  • see the photo, the marks on the nut by the “L” in Ultimate aren’t from a photo glare and all around.

Thanks!

with that kind of extension system that can happen when there isn’t enough extension inserting into the clamp.

you might need new extensions that are longer.

Either that, or your mechanics are dumb or something is wrong with the clamp.

Hi Chris,

Sorry your Cervelo’s extensions are rotating!

To stop rotation:

  1. Clean the extensions and the collet mating surfaces with alcohol or acetone, then apply carbon assembly paste. Don’t get it on the nut’s threads.
  2. Apply grease to the nuts threads and tighten them a lot. Use a big wrench. (There’s a big torque number, but who has a torque wrench that fits anyway.)

If the nuts get damaged, remember the bike came with a second set (with the other extension, in your case the High-V).

Cheers,

Damon

I have the same bike but my aero bars are fine. Love the bike it is wicked fast.

Further to Damon’s comments, if you put electic tape over the nuts the big wrench will not scratch while tightening.

Damon, thanks for the how-to. I’m sending a link to this thread to my LBS guys. However it seems that I did not get some parts that came with the bike, e.g. the High-V and a second set of nuts. Do you have a list/photo of what comes with the bike.

Mr. Green, good tip to tell my LBS. I know the first scratch is the “worst” but seeing the notes on what should be a simple solution and an LBS that is an authorized Cervelo dealer is making me question their support/skills for Cervelo Tri bikes.

Hi Chris,

No list, just the fact that each P5 with Aduro bars included both High-V and Low mounts.

Good idea to go back to your Cervelo retailer with this thread. As well, our Customer Service guys are well informed on the P5 and are always happy to take phone calls any time to help out their techs if needed.

Cheers,

Damon-
This is off topic, but in the OP’s picture is this the correct height between the bottom of the spacers and the frame or is there a headset cap that isn’t needed in there?

Hi pyrahna,

Good eye. Hard for me to tell for sure, but if there’s a headset top cap in there it’s a very slim one. It’s optional, could leave it in or replace it with an equivalent AeroMatched spacer, either way is fine.

Cheers,

I’ve had my aero bars come loose but they were Volans so freaking scary. But that ride is great looking

I had exactly the same problem.
A fair bit of torque helped but they are still not rock solid tight. I’ll try Damon’s solution.

Damon and pyrahna,

Took a close up of the headset so you can see the spacer config. Is there a thin(er) AeroMatched spacer that would “fill the gap” so to speak?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the closeup!
The AeroMatched spacers come in 5mm or 10m thicknesses, and there’s definitely not even a 5mm gap there.
Comparing visually to another P5, I’d say there’s no spacer, which is correct.

You’re good to go!

Cheers,

Damon,

I found the mount for the two front bolts in the aero bar had become loose. I took it in the my LBS for repair and just heard that Cervelo issued a recall on the bars. Can you share any more insight on the issue? More importantly, given the history of shipping delays with the bars in the past, how confident are you in September date for the new bars? Thanks.

Hi pablotri,

Glad you spotted the bolts and took your bar in.

Technically speaking, we and 3T have only issued a “stop sale” at this time; legally we’re not allowed to call it a recall. 3T and Cervelo are working with the CPSC to get permission to issue a voluntary recall, but that’s on their time table and will come later, so officially there is no recall at this time.

Anyway, that’s a technicality. We have hundreds of replacement bars in stock now, so if your bar is affected, I would expect you would experience only the usual shipping time, plus the time your mechanic needs install them.

It’s an interesting situation, since all the Aduro bars we’ve tested exceed the official strength standard. We’ve decided that “real life” use needs a higher standard, and 3T have revised the design. The revised bars are what your shop will get, if your Aduro is affected.

Cheers,

Thanks Damon. I appreciate the news. I promise I didn’t do anything other than a lot of hard riding that would loosen the bolts. Otherwise, it’s is a great bike.

You’re welcome, pablotri. Good to hear you’re riding it hard - that’s what racing bikes are for!
