P3 Head Tube Prep

I have a 2001 Cervelo P3 with the non-integrated headset. I’m going to replace the oem cane creek Headset with a Chris King, and was reading their tech instructions which affirmed the importance of the head tube being properly reamed and faced, and warned that many frames are not prepared correctly from the factory. (Even if they have had a headset previously installed)

Do I need to worry about this, or can I just get someone to go ahead and press the cups in? Thanks.

Hello,

The easiest way to tell if it been done is to remove the old headset and look at the top and bottom edges of the headtube. They should be flat, paintfree, and have fairly sharp corners. If they have paint on them they definately need to be faced.

You know, I wrench my own bike, just built one up the other day. The two things I don’t mess with are installing headsets and bottom brackets. You LBS will charge >$20 to do this, and it will be money well spent.

Just my $0.02
