I’m planning to OWS at Johnson’s beach some time this week to help me prepare for the vineman in July, but I can’t find much information about it on the web. Is OWS even allowed/recommended outside of the Vineman event? yelp reviews mentioned low water in early summer, so any insight on wheather this is a good idea. Any other places nearby to OWS? how about bodega bay?
no real need to practice @ johnson’s beach… water depth is <6 feet at most… even with high elbows you will scrape bottom on majority of the swim. coming back is slightly downstream but nothing substantial. hope this helps
Lake Sonoma is nearby, a team I coached has did some OWS practice there 5 years ago. Next closest lake is Berryessa (Napa - Kind of a haul to get to), where you are allowed to swim. In the SF area, you can swim at Aquatic Park (near fisherman’s wharf), water is currently 51 degrees. Prety much anywhere around there on the coast is a bad idea. Rip currents, cold water and sharks come to mind as good reasons to find a lake.
Another option for the Bay area is Coyote Point park. I’ve swam there a few time over the last three weeks when I have short layovers at SFO. Water temp is about 5 degress warmer than the Aquatic Park due to its location further into the bay. Actually probably warmer than 5 degrees. Last swam there on the 12th and it felt like about 60. It helped with 20 kts. onshore wind pushing the warm surface water in. And 2-3 foots waves.
