Overseas races and CO2.. who do u use to ship your C02..?

So i’m gonna go a race overseas. All indications point towards me shipping my C02 cartridges to myself at the race site hotel. I am choosing this route as opposed to relying on local supply of CO2.

I know that many of u guys have gone this route before. Question is…

  • What shipping company do u guys use…?
  • Also, how much did it cost u and where (country) did u ship it to…?

It appears that US Postal will not allow u to ship CO2. See Item E below (which was taken from the USPS site)…

d. Corrosives, liquid or solid.

(2) Nonflammable with an absolute pressure exceeding 40 psi at 70°F or 104 psi at 130°F.

f. Poisons, irritants, controlled substances, and drug paraphernalia.

g. Magnetized material with a magnetic field strength of .002 gauss or more at a distance of 7 feet.

h. Dry ice (carbon dioxide solid).

Can you not buy CO2 when you get to the race site? Surely, if it’s a large race, it will at least have an Expo where you can buy CO2.

You will have to rely on a local supply of CO2, or have them sent by boat, air shipment of CO2 cartrides is not permitted.

This is what I do for a living, regulate transportation of these types of materials.

I don’t want to rely 100% on availability at the local race site. I am planning to cover my ass in the event that there is none there or if they run out.

Question still remains… who do i see/call to ship this stuff (boat or whatever)…?

where overseas? europe? you dont need to fly with them, no carrier will ship them and if you ship them and dont label them and something goes pear shaped you will be in a spot of bother…

To IM Malaysia in Asia. Can’t fly, can’t ship, nobody wants to build a bridge there, so WTF am i supposed to do…? It’ll take me a good 10-15 mins to pump the bike tire using a frame pump… How do u guys do it…? I mean those of u who often race in exotic locations…

Mate, it’s Malaysia, not Upper Volta.

Dollars to doughnuts you’ll be able to buy them in KL.

There’s probably about 500 CO2 factories with a 100 km radius.

Well, there are 2 CO2 cartridges under every airline seat in something called a life vest.

Also you can buy an approved life vest and replace the little cartridges with your cartridge of choice and put it in your checked baggage, that has worked in the past. Hope this helps.

Someone did mention abt sneaking them in there in some other post. I ride a P2K and it has a bladed seatpost. Will it fit…? i dunno. However, don’t they x-ray the whole bike box and i don’t even wanna think abt what would happen if they see that and decide to escort me into a room where i would come face to face with some dude called Bubba wearing a pair of latex gloves.

You might be right. I might find some in KL. I am flying into KL and spending a few days there to visit friends & family before the race. However, i am also flying from KL to the island of Langkawi (race site). Thats another problem there. I have to board the f-ing plane again. Does anyone know if can get CO2 in Langkawi…?

If they won’t allow me to carry my own CO2 cartridges, why would they allow me to take a life vest with CO2 cartridges already preloaded in there…? Isn’t that the same…?

Could u imagine my fate…? Walking into a plane with my own life vest…? its like inviting bad luck by advertising to everyone on board that this plane is gonna crash and i’m the only one wearing a life vest

I wouldnt smuggle them either, but its not illegal to have a life vest in your checked luggage (the one that is going in the belly of the airplane), its not your fault that you didnt know that there where cartridges inside, catch my drift. Also when checking your luggage, do it curbside and it will avoid further scrutiny, tip the guy and he will take care of you. This tip is free of charge:)
