Why are so many people in an uproar over Terri Schiavo(one life) but there has been very little if any uproar over the Red Lake Minnesota school shootings(9 dead, 8 undeniably innocent)?
I am asking for intelligent debate because I really do not understand the priorities of congress, the media and the public in these cases.
We’ve already done the school shooting thing. Time for something new. Plus, everyone agree the Red Lake shootings were horrible - no dissention = no discussion.
The Schiavo debacle forced a moral debate and raised an end of life issue that many, many people will face – be it through a relative, friend or themselves. Red Lake was a tragedy, no question, but it doesn’t present the same kind of ethical quandry. While the media attention on Schiavo’s death was obscene, a few positives did emerge. First, there has been an increased awareness of end-of-life planning issues. Second, the public began actually talking about an issue of substance and not what Paris Hilton is wearing or whether J Lo is really married or what poor Brad Pitt and Charlie Sheen are going to do now that their wives have bolted.
I don’t think congress has anything to do with this tragedy. I do think the media and public have basically ignored it for two reasons. Not making a judgement just an observation. One, this happened on a remote Indian Reservation not white bread middle America. People just do not connect with this like they did say, Columbine. Its a shame because it is every bit as tragic. The shooter was an American Indian not some middle class white kid who could live next door to any one of us. The second reason as I see it is the anti-gun crowd are usually the ones that step up and start pointing to the availability of automatic and assault style weapons. In this case the kid used a single shot .22 caliber gun owned, legally, by his grandfather. No M16’s, Uzi’s or any type of automatic type weapon. The anti-gun crowd just has not been as vocal and visible on this one.
Where is the fun in 10 little indian kids dying? What would The Freak Show do? Stand in front of the school and scream to Jesus and get arrested? What is there to film? Where any pretty white women killed?
This is where relegion cracks me up. Jesus would have wanted Terri to live because it is one life that just needed food and the activist judges and ACLU just wanted her to die!!! God has been taken out of the public and we are being punished for it.
Little brown kids? Fuck them! What does god have to do with them? My favorite talk show host can’t yell and scream about brown people.

There is nothing to argue about or even do here. There is no dispute that this murderer did something both morally and legally wrong. Because he killed himself, there is nothing to do with him now except bury him. If he had not killed himself, there would not have been any dispute about what to do with him: arrest him, indict him and try him.

Yeah not to mention the tradgedy in Sudan, criminally biased elections in Zimbabwe, and new violence in the Democaratic Republic of Congo.
