Many years from now do you think Lance will be more known by the general public as the man who came up with the fundraising bracelet instead of the man who won 6 tdf’s ?

I knew it…

I saw a kid, maybe 10yrs old, at the ice cream store the other night and he must have had 20 different colors on each arm. We were talking about each of the colors and when he got to yellow I had to ask about Lance. He didn’t have much to say other than it’s another bracelet about Cancer (he mentioned the pink breast cancer one first). I gave him a quick rundown on Lance them his parents pulled him away from me. I think I may have slipped and ripped on all of the other copy bracelets during my rant.

Can’t people just donate the money, even more than $1 and not take the copy bracelet. It’s gotten lame. I wonder what it will be like around July '05.

I think we should sell lavender bracelets to help Tibbs get that damn P3!

My sister in law will probably me making some soon, 100% of the profits go to her.

I think Brian286 has some “Support our troops” bands that some of our finest Americans are selling down at your local 7-eleven.

What I find most offensive is that people will try to turn a profit from the most tragic of circumstances. I have no problem with someone making a fair wage providing disaster relief services, but somebody playing “one for me, one for you” selling bracelets is just profiteering.

As far as branding goes(along the Livestrong vein) I would expect that any human with a newsfeed, reasonable cognitive ability, and the smallest amount of compassion feels awful about the devastation caused by the tsunami, and would give money to a disaster relief fund.

I don’t quite see the point of wearing a bracelet.

$2.00 per bracelet. $1.00 to charity. I bought a yellow band because 100% of the money went to the foundation. As far as I’m concerned, these others are one step removed from a scam. I suspect none of them meet the 501(c)(3) requirements to actually be considered a non-profit. Because SOMEONE is profiting for the sale of these bands, and it isn’t tsunami victims, or soldiers, or anyone else who needs the money.

The racket mentioned in this thread has G&A and Fundraising expenses of 50%. Doctors without Borders has G&A and Fundraising expenses of 14.3%. I guess stamped rubber bands must be much more expensive than delivering medical supplies to the middle of nowhere.

If you really want to help, stick with the big-name 501(c)(3) charities with a track record of making a difference in situations like this one.

My favorite parts of this message:

  1. “Custom Silicone Bracelets” is suddenly a proper name, or a title, thus justifying all caps

  2. The nation’s leading provider of silicone bracelets? Are they the company that produces the Nike bracelets?

couldn’t agree more. a donation of 100% is much more palatable. I just had to see what the pricing was to make “Custom” bracelets and this is what I found out.

I no longer wonder who is making the profit. It’s a shame that the simple fundraising efforts of the Livestrong campaign have been irreprehensibly skewed by other charities.

5,000 should be enough for a P3, right?

I don’t think the LAF was the first to sell the bracelets to raise money. They certainly are the most successful.

Did you also see that Brainchild (beautiful name) isn’t discounting bulk buys? So, if you order 50,000, they make even more money!
