Passenger jet in flames at Toronto airport
CTV.ca News Staff
A passenger jet burst into flames after apparently skidding off the runway at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.
Few details are known, and there is no word on whether there are any casualties.
Police indicate the aircraft was an Air France jet that was trying to land when it ran into trouble.
Live television pictures show flames and smoke billowing from the aircraft in a tree-filled area near the airport.
CTV Toronto’s Jim Junkin reports that 200 people are thought to have been on board.
Witness Mark Yppelar told CTV Newsnet that he saw heavy lightning strikes in the area before he saw the aircraft on fire.
The Greater Toronto Airport Authority is expected to hold a press conference at 5 p.m. ET.

Hopefully all aboard are OK.
not sure if the people on board were able to get off in time or not but looking at the footage on tv right now no one left on board is going to make it out…a secondary fuel line explosion just went off…sad day.
that sucks !
Where are Gerard and Phil?
latest, most and maybe all escaped.
that was the news I heard too…guess people do pay attention to those emergency situation sessions pre flight after all…good news indeed.
Work at the TO airport, it is a nasty area the plane went into, basically a treed ravine. Making evacuations even more difficult.
Yeah, took a quick look at Fox News and they were commenting on the fact that it looked as though busses were moving away from the crash with people aboard…obviously details very sketchy at the moment but it looks like this could have been much, much worse.
Thoughts and prayers with all involved.
Not to worry Tom, neither were on that flight:)
Cheers,
Heather
.
Thank you very much.
CNN is now saying that maybe, just maybe no one has died…
this is so crazy! i was on the highway (express lanes) when the lightning hit. the wind/rain/hail was intense! it was hailing sideways for crying out loud! i knew it was near to the airport and it wasn’t until i got home i found out what happened.
we are slowly getting reports about survivors. not a clear number though. many to local hospitals including one to sick kids in toronto.
fingers crossed that everyone got out and that my firefighter friends are safe while trying to deal with this.
k
They just confirmed NO fatalities…talk about a miracle.
Absolutely awesome. Fantastic luck.
Just read lightning hit the aircraft as it was about to land, lights went out and it ran off the runway. 12 injured no one killed. Hard of belive looking at the video.

I bet there is a fleet of people at Airbus that are doing cartwheels right now…
In general an aircraft should have no issues with lightening strike. Sounds more like a malfunction of some other aircraft systems.
this is bad…most of the canadian team was supposed to fly out of t.o. tomorrow to come to denmark. anyone know what’s going on with delays and stuff?
