Way off topic but better then politics. Any Hawaiian’s know the phonetic spelling for Ho’oku’i, ho’ohui kukupa’u? Apparently this is Hawaiian for the spirit of enthusiasm of connecting or “coming together.” Im working on a speech for a college Pres. If he slaughters it I go to hell.
Since no one has replied yet I will do my best - at least we get this thing bumped…
While my dialect is valley (that’s san fernando, not waipio) I did live in Hawaii for a bit and picked up on the languauge. Here goes:
Ho’oku’i, ho’ohui kukupa’u
HO O KOO E, HO O HOO E KOO KOO PAH OO
O is O, U is OO, A is AH and I is E.
Hawaii = HAH VAH E
Hope that helps - m
Good job, you got it.
Aloha,
Larry
Hawaii = HAH VAH E
Reminds me of an old joke:
A tourist gets off the airplane in Honolulu (insert apostrophes as necessary). He asks the girl putting the lei on him, “Excuse me. Is this name pronounced Ha-Wah-ee or Ha-Vah-ee.”
“It’s Ha-Va-ee.”
“Thank you”
“You’re Vellcome.”
Vaudeville never dies.
