Finally broke down and purchased the dream theater…the kid will “take over” the other living space…so had to break down and get the wife and I a new system. Did a bit of research , not a ton and ended up with the new Samsung 50 inch DLP hi Def TV. Fron t speakers will be Klipschrf-5’ powered by a Denon2805 receiver…Klipsch center channel, RC-35 with Klipsch Rw 12 sub. Will have 3 rear surround speaker mounted on som eceiling beams about 13-14 feet above the floo angled down toward the seating area. These are the anthony gallo a’diva’s. Also got a DVD recorder and denon 5 disc changer.
The only problem is w’ell never get to turn it up because the kid will be sleeping a couple of rooms away!
Would be curious as to what everyone else likes or dislikes about there system… Im no audiophile by any means, but just wanted a sweet system that we can use for years and years. The couch and remote are much more of a temptation now thats for sure.
We’ve got an old TV with an old VCR. Heck, we still only have regular cable. Other than Survivor and a few educational documentary shows on A&E, who has time to watch???
I have a 13 inch with built in vcr. I don’t know how he can afford it but my five year old has a 50inch Hitachi, Pioneer Amp and Reciever and CD changer, MB Quart speakers and Sub, Panisonic DVD. If I ask nice I get to watch Superfriends with him!
Made my jump last year… Just like bikes, you’re always tweaking! Always, looking for something to upgrade and spend out the wazzoo!
Panasonic 42" plasma with Dish 811 HD receiver, B&W front and center speakers connected with Kimber Kable to Anthem power amp to Yahama receiver and Yamaha DVD player, plus Karoake player for the wife (God help me!).
Next addition will be surround speakers. I’d recommend a power amp to power you’re Klipsch. You won’t believe how much better it can get!
Bike and audio equipment, I can’t think of anything better to spend my time talking about. I like the sound of tube amplifiers. McIntosh is not the company they use to be (bought and sold twice), but Audio Research still builds with top quality materials. These amplifiers sound so good, it will make it had to leave your house and ride your bike.
does a 15inch tv/vcr combo count as a home system. i also have a small bookshelf stereo system somewhere. i do have 4 bikes, 2 more frames and 5 race wheels though.
anyone want to do some trading?
I have a big TV (don;t know how big- some kind of bigscreen thing), a Sony, with some fancy-ass speakers and a bunch of other stuff going on down there like a DVD player, blah, blah. I don’t use it much. I watch CNN, documentaries and movies. My girlfriend likes it, she only has a little TV in her condo down the street so we watch a lot of movies on it. My one cat likes it too, and will watch TV. I watch TV maybe once a week, or twice. Mostly I am working, training or doing something else.
started with some cheap stuff and gradually built on it. Now have a set of home built speakers that are just lovely, a sub that rattles the walls, never mind the windows, a 32" widescreen for watching tv, and we’re about to get a projector for that ‘big screen’ effect.
I should add that the tv out here isn’t great, and we haven’t even bothered to get a satellite dish. We tend to stay in and watch movies though, as there are only 2 cinemas in the country and the nearest is a 1.5 hour drive. Other than that, we’re out sailing, diving, playing sports or training.

I have never understood this huge investment in home theater systems. I do have a great stereo as I listen to a great deal of music.
I have a 20 inch(I think) TV with no cable and a VCR, that I am not sure even works.
It’s a personal thing, but if I am going to be spending that much leisure time around the hosue, I would rather be reading a good book and/or listening to some nice jazz or world music.
We have about a 25 inch TV that my father-in-law bought because our perfectly functioning 19 inch TV bothered him some how. I guess you cannot complain too much about a gift. We also have a VCR and a DVD and some wonderful rabbit ears for reception. What could be worse than having more than 100 channels and therefore needing more than ten minutes to find out that there is nothing worth watching?
Commendations for recommending AVS Forum—I spend some time there myself. Great knowledge in some of those forums.
My system is: 40-in Toshiba rear-projection (Plasma is next), B&W 705 speakers, Lexicon preamp, Rotel amp, Zenith HD-Receiver for DirecTV & over-the-air high definition reception, Progressive-DVD, etc.—used mostly for DVD movies & Spinervals videos, high-def sports, and a few prime-time network shows.
Years ago, when my roommate and I were “big-time” audiophiles, I dumped a bunch of $$ into a Yamaha AX-550 integrated amp, TX-950 tuner, 5-disc CD changer, Klipsch Kg-4’s (still in mint condition, professionally laquered by a buddy of mine who worked in a high end custom cabnetry shop), Mirage M-490’s custom bi-wired with Audioquest wire), Audioquest cables connecting everything. The system is almost 15 years old and still rocks the house. I’ve got an older, original dbx 3bx processor that’s not hooked up at the momment.
Close to three years ago, the fiancee dumped me for a guy making $5k/month, so I went out and bought a 32 inch Sony TV to ease the pain. Best trade I ever made…

Upstairs in the “music” system is Martin Logan Monolith Electrostatic Ribbon speakers, Halfler amps, Harmon Kardon (old school) Pre Pro and Harman Kardon Professional CD/SACD. Kimber Cable and Fiber Optics. I use Fiber for DTS, AC-3 and THX…SACD uses 6 channel copper interconnects.

Yeah… But there is nothing like Jazz on a Planar speaker (Martin Logan or Magnepan) and a JoLida tube amp…they can be yours for like $600.00 for the speakers check out www.magnepan.com then you can get the JoLida for cheap…get a source and you are in Audio heaven.
I don’t think I’ve been so happy not to see BLOSE mentioned anywhere in a long time.
My equipment is a biamp setup with a 6L7-based preamp, mid/highs handled with 11 watt 211 tube monoblocks and subs running a custom 1.1kW/ch class AB amp that my friend designed. Right now they are driving MagnePan MG-1s with quad manifolded (semi-horn) EVX-155b woofers, although I might switch to the 12" because they are a little punchier. The main speakers sorta rotate, NHT, AR and my own Focal/Hi-Vi Research/Eton stuff when I’m not redesigning something. Where do I find the time to build this stuff and still race?!?!?
Oh, yeah, er…my home theater is an Acoustic Research HC5 sub/sat system with a sorta-noisy Pioneer receiver and a 25" TV in my bedroom. It sounds great in there, but I prefer listening to 2-ch over the weirdness that a 5.1 receiver does to a good stereo recording.
