OT: flap over flip flops?

odd. seems the Northwestern University Women’s National Championship Lacrosse team got a photo opp with President Bush. a couple wore flip flops and were quite apparent in the photo.

front page headline in the Chicago Trib was along the lines of; “You wore flip flops to the White House?” seems reasonable attire all things considered. i don’t think any of those in the photo looked shabby, disrespectful, or otherwise out of place.

(edited to add photo…wouldn’t take first time around)

Well, I guess it all depends on how formal you think society should be. I tend to think that if you know you are going to the White House to meet our President you should at least dress for the occaision and “flip flops” don’t qualify in my opinion. I don’t think it is a huge deal but does show a little disprespect to the office. I tend to think that, in general, we have become a little too casual as a society.

funny, that’s my cousin on the front to the left, wearing flip-flops.

I guess she was on the Today show yesterday, but I didn’t see it.

I think girls could get away with summer-time flip flops, guys could not.

If Dick Cheney can wear a ski jacket and a beanie cap that looked like it came from a garage sale to a holocaust memorial then I would be inclined to wear flip flops, basketball shorts and a wife beater to visit the white house. Besides all those girls look nice and presentable to me.

I see young women all the time on their way to work in a snappy business suit and flip flops. Drives me crazy.

I prefer to make my entire outfit slovenly, that way I can be consistent.

If my sons did that my wife would never let them back into the house. That said, I am sure that they are all very nice girls.

My thinking is that a lot of women wear flip flops on their commute to work and change once they arrive. I think it’s a comfort and safety thing. Living in San Diego, I pretty much only wear flip flops or no shoes at all. I guess it all depends on where you live. I got fancy flip flops and I got regular flip flops!

My wife phoned me about the article in the Chicago Tribune and one of the players moms was quoted as saying she was “mortified” when she saw it. I want to hear what the coaches have to say, being a college women’s soccer coach I can tell you I made girls change for a conference tourney banquet, I certainly wouldn’t let them go to meet a head of state like that.

holy smokes…get her to trade the stick for a bike.

My daughters inform me that flip flops are perfectly acceptable footwear. (??At the White House???)

I don’t think that’s bad at all.

Then again, I went to the White House wearing Birkenstocks and the damn Secret Service made me get rid of the Jagermeister that was in my backpack. In my defense, it was the 4th of July, and I wasn’t going to meet the prez…

Who’s the ugly chick in the suit in the back row?

Not these women - unless they leave their work shoes at work (I suppose that’s a formal possibility)

I live in Chicago, and in the summer it’s all flip flops all the time (other seasons are a different story of course). But regardless, flip flops are very casual. You dont wear them to the opera, and you dont wear them to the White House as invited guests of the president.

Well thankfully I don’t go to the opera and I don’t see myself at the white house anytime soon!

surely you jest
.

There was a university professor at the University of Hawaii when i was there that rode his bike to work. Whenever he ran across an abandoned flip flop he picked it up and these were all he wore, everywhere, including the opera, graduation, weddings, etc. They didn’t even match nor were they the same size. No one took offense. It was simply who he was.

My apologies to the forum …

Me neither!

Hell, I barely wear pants most days.

and in Hawaii, they’re referred to as SLIPPERS!

I go to Northwestern and I really think the entire nation is talking about it more than most people around here are. It’s so freakin hot/humid here now that perhaps it was just the lingering heat that prompted them to wear them.

Actually, I am quite surprised and would expect more from the Northwestern ilk. We pride ourselve on our soon to be yuppie-ness as well as our purchased friends (read: Greek system), 40k a year country club, daddy’s beamer, and a piss-poor basketball team. To not live up to one of those five tenants is something all of the Northwestern community should be ashamed of.
