Start looking for something more economical and environment friendly to carry your bike in.

not any time soon.

Your title is a bit misleading since the articles is about low sales of big SUV’s and even mentions that sales of small SUV’s like Toyota and Hyundai are up.

The SUV isn’t dead, just getting smaller and better at fuel efficiency
.

People are freaking out. . .but once we get used to the higher gas prices, people will start buying larger SUVs again. . . and truck . . . etc.

Remember when gas went up to around $1.80 and everyone was freaking out? Well, now that looks cheap. It is all perspective.

I used to have an Isuzu Rodeo. Sold it and bought the Toyota Matrix. There is tons of rear cargo space with the seats down! I get 29-32 mpg and can take 2 people and 2 bikes inside very easily. It would be tough to fit 3 bikes w/ people and gear, but it is great. No more SUVs for me!

in 1990 people were’nt driving SUV’s as big as they are now.

The rise of the SUV was due mostly to a good economy and cheap gas thru the 90’s. People are learning I think. So what if we get used to the new prices. Who’s going want to drive a big SUV knowing prices could spike up again at any time ?

It will take a long period of stability in prices for SUV’s to rise again. I say good riddance to the goddamn things.

At least a truck can haul mulch for my garden. What the hell would I do with an expedition? Carry my one kid?

what a waste.

besides, the new MIata is way too much fun to waste my life driving an SUV. bolt a hitch mount on it and a bike carrier and I’m off.

A waste for you? yes, but you decide that. But a waste for the family that has 4 kids, 2 dogs a bird and fish? I don’t think you can decide that. . . .

Is an Expedition, Suburban, Excursion, for everyone? Nope, but I will tell you something. I rather my kid (I don’t have one, just saying what if) be sitting in the middle of one of those than in a Chevy Cobalt, Mazda Miata when it gets hit by an F-150 in an accident. . . not saying that alone will save them, but they have a better chance. Paying an extra $100 a month in gas is worth it to me, but that is just me. . .maybe not worth it to others.

Mind you there are cars out threre that suck just as much gas (and require premium on top of it) as the big SUVs.

A Miata? Don’t even get me started on those. . . but to each their own.

I’d love to get a miata, but it’s not practical for me. I am going to get a small to mid-size SUV. I need the room, but I don’t need Expedition type room.

agreed - but whatever happened to the station wagon - why does everyone want a taller vehicle? it’s a contest i know.it’snice to see over all the other cars, but taller vehicles roll easier. I just don’t think we’re making much sense as a society with the vehicles we make and purchase.
how bout a volvo wagon? that would get it done as well as an SUV for most families I think.

hey this is all my opinion.

and whatcha got against Miatas? you ought to drive the new redisgned 06.
it’s a gas. so to speak.

Oh, nothing wrong with the Miata. . .just not for me.

I can agree that most people don’t need the big ole SUV. A crossover or smaller suv is probably more practical.

Oh yeah, everybody likes to complain about giant SUVs till they want to move something, take a bunch of people somewhere, get a lift in the snow, or go on a trip.

It would delight me to be the sole huge sized SUV driver on the roads.

I have no problems paying my fuel bills. Shoot, my boats burn way more gas and the pumps at the pier are always $1 more per gallon.

Seems to me the people who do the most squawking about SUVs are the ones who secretly want to be driving them, but are afraid to let people know what they really want in life.

But I hope you’re right. I hope there are far fewer of us on the roads in the future. But I’ll still be there when you need me.

These days they are making the SUV’s wider so the rollover factor is a lot less then it used to be, especially amongst the small SUV’s
.

I hate to admit it, but when the Sentra goes … I really have only two options

or

No, neither are ACTUALLY mine … except in my soul.

No kidding. Americans aren’t getting taller. They’re getting wider. But street lanes are only so wide so the only solution maybe to get rid of the passenger seat and just have one big seat per row.

Some also have trouble fitting through the car door so maybe a big dome canopy is in order.

“Seems to me the people who do the most squawking about SUVs are the ones who secretly want to be driving them,”

Doubt that. I’ve never liked them because they are gas guzzlers. If every person on the planet drove an SUV how long would our oil/gas supply last, not to mention pollution.

I really don’t understand why people buy these vehicles that can go off road and then they never leave the suburbs. Sort of like buying a high end end mountain bike and never riding it off a paved road.

“the new MIata is way too much fun to waste my life driving an SUV”

We’re thinking of picking up an older Miata. I’ve always been into the British sports cars - owned a ton of MG’s and Triumphs. Wanted to get another TR6, but the prices are now quite high and who needs all the mechanical hassles of a classic British sports car. The older Miata’s are cheap, reliable and a lot of fun.

Nice woody.

The family car ain’t what it used to be …
