OT-Drinking wine

My fiance is English and she is slowly changing me into a European.

One of those changes is that I am now drinking wine with almost every dinner. Problem is I now wake up with diarhea or stomach gas. The wine drinking is the only lifestyle change I have made recently. The effects are worse the more glasses I drink(usually only 1, sometimes up to 2 1/2).

I have gone cold turkey from the wine for a few days and the stomach problems disappeared so i am fairly certain that it is the wine that is causing them.

Does wine have this effect on anyone else?

“Does wine have this effect on anyone else?”

God no, man. Your’s is the worst news I will hear all day. Truly sad.

Have you tried different types of wine?

England is not famed for wine and there’s not the same ‘requirement’ for English people to drink wine with every meal like there is on the French.

For me, no symptoms, other than a sore head.

thankfully, no.

does it happen regardless of whether you’re drinking white or red? difference of degrees but same general symptoms? interaction with some sort of daily supplement (if you partake of those too), be it a multivitamin or something more esoteric? I’d start expanding the list of variables with interactions in mind and continue the experimentation. damn shame to have to give up the vino

Sounds like a mild allergic reaction to something in the wine. I’m not a doctor or anything but this is possible. I had a gf years ago that would get sloshed if we were drinking beer, but would hold hard liquor all night long. One night, for some reason, we got a 6 of O,Douls, she got sloshed on NA beer. Found out it was the yeast in beer she was allergic to, it made her giddy and light headed similiar to alcohol intoxication. She ended up unable to eat bread without feeling drunk.

hmmm…is it red or white?

and, I hate to ask this, is it cheap wine? sometimes the tannins in cheap wine are strong and can be irritating…

a couple of years ago we drank a boat load of cheap red wine over the holidays. we all came down with stomach problems. kind of like cheap beer…it can put a hurt on.

ir you’re drinking good red, try a white.

or if you’re drinking a cheap red, upgrade! it can get expensive, but one glass is good for you and you can stretch it by corking and refridgerating…also as you learn more you’ll be able to identify good inexpensive reds that won’t put a hurt on.

this past weekend I actually has a glass of box wine…got only half way through the glass and had an irritated stomach all night. and I know better!!

ps-life is too short for cheap wine! just say no to two buck chuck (and all other pretenders!)

We drink wine almost every supper. In fact we make our own red and white with those brew kits. Never had a problem. In fact wine is well proven to be good for the heart and BP. I’ve never heard of anything like this because of wine. The worst thing I’ve ever had sore head if I drink too much.

listen to your kittycat…

i agree with what she said; tannins and sulfites are the probable culprits, and they change with every different maker and varietal.

my advice is to try many different wines, red and white, and find what works for you. you will be very happy when you find one or two that agree with your system!

Like others have said, I think that it might be something in the particular type/brand of wine that you are drinking that is causing the problem.

Wine, particularly red, in moderation( a glass or two a day) has a number of health benefits. I have seen it written that it actually aids in the digestion of certain foods. Red wine is also packed with anti-oxidants and a number of phyto-chemicals that help the body. Of course it’s easy to go over the line, with wine and then it can become a negative.

For the record, I will typically have a glass with dinner later in the week and then on weekends - so 3 - 4 nights/ week.

Never had trouble with wine. Maybe pool water? Where are you swimming?

My mother in law has a very similar reaction to wines with Sulfates in it.

The bad thing is it is hard to find wines without them.

sulfites might be the cause, some people are allergic. you might try drinking some wines labeled “sulifte free”, i think Frey Vineyards (CA) makes some? Sulfites are a naturally occuring product of fermantation so there will always be some though.

I’m out of touch with american wines right now. Sulfites are used more by american wineries also, i think, so try some italian or french wines.

Being a very poor chemist, the sulfates would result in gas due to reaction with stomach acid (HCl):

SO4(2-) (aq) + 2H(+1) (aq) ====> H2S (g) + O2 (g)

I suppose…Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong.

As far as myself…I can’t drink wine or alcohol after 8-ish as I’ll usually have a rotten night’s sleep.

(edited for spelling)

i know what you mean about american wines. rarely do I buy or drink US wines anymore…it’s just not worth it! not only do they all mimic each other, but damn they are overdone!

English??? Its probably her cooking not the wine.

very possibly the sulfites… try an organic wine, they are significantly lower in sulfites, may help…

http://www.ecowine.com/sulfites.htm

can also buy the organic wines from that website. I haven’t tried them since I can drink even box wine without ill effects.

Upmarket boxes I’ve tried include a Hardy’s Shiraz from Australia, and a Black Box cab from somewhere in California. Neither was outstanding, but both recognizable as the varietal they claimed, and a perfectly good nourishing gulp for an everyday wine…

The only advise I would suggest is stop drinking all together.

And miss out on all that gas?
