Orthotics/supination and calf pain?

I have been suffering from calf pain for about a month. I’m beginning to think that my ortheses that were crafted to reduce pronation and cure P/F and knee pain are beginning to cause other problems. The P/F and knee problems have cleared up and this winter and spring I have been able to build a decent run base for the first time in years. Now my calves and shins are bothering me. The calf pain is on the outside now and I’m guessing this is the peroneal muscle? I would describe it as a “knot” and after tonights run I noticed it was actually visible when I flex the calf. I have a “hard” orthotic in the Nimbus and Landreth and the sole wear appears to be all on the outside mid foot with little sign of pronation on the front of the sole.
Is it possible that my body has strenghtened from the base I have built and I no longer need as much correction?

Anything is possible. The amount I have pronated in the past has significantly reduced and I had to change my shoes to go with the flow. Might be time to take the orthotics out and try a mild stability shoe. I said might! You should go back to whomever made your orthotics for you and check out the situation.

Yes, too many variables to asses. You need some pronation (especially midfoot, not necessarily rearfoot pronation) for normal running. Does your orthotic have a 1st ray cutout? External forefoot post? Rearfoot post I’m sure. If made by a podiatrist, have him/her adjust with your new issues. You can certainly try a shoe with a medial rearfoot post (say, a 2130 or Kayano if you want to stay with Asics), but you may run the risk of plantar fasciitis returning. I like the rigid orthotic in the lower heel/neutral Landreth for many people. I’d stay away from true “motion control” shoes (labeled by the manufacturers) like the Brooks Beast, Asics MC Plus/Gel Foundation, etc.
