I’ve had tons of running issues (IT band, plantar, runners knee, weak hips, horrible biomechanics, etc) and with the help of a sports PT and a podiatrists I am now running in the correct shoe type for me; neutral type.
I remove the insole and insert orthotics and run like a beast.
I would recommend you walking around with orthotics for a few hours or days before you try running. Then run short distances at a time until you don’t even think about them anymore.
I couldn’t stand my orthotics at first, had several ‘hot spots’ and blistered like crazy, bodyglide solved everything.
Listen to your body and communicate with your podiatrist if your issues persist.
For those that run with orthotics, do you just remove the insole, and place your orthotics in the shoe?
I’m assuming you don’t need stability or cushioning type shoes since the orthotics do this, so do you just buy “natural” or “free” e shoes?
Thanks for any help!
Yes you just replace the standard insole. The type of shoe you get will probably be neutral but that would depend on what your orthotic guys states.
I ran with mine for a year. They helped. But they were band aiding a bio-mechanical issue. I was happier sorting that and getting rid of the orthotic. Maybe you have a long term mechanical issue but if you do not then I highly recommend sorting the issue and binning the orthotic.
Yup, just slip off the original insole and slip in the orthotic. The only downside I see to mine are there aren’t holes in them to allow airflow. I tried running in Saucony A5’s with the original insole and I could feel better airflow. I would rather trade stability over that airflow though.
Yes, I remove the insoles from my running shoes and place the orthotic inside. For my dress shoes, I keep the insole in the shoe and put the orthotic on top of that.
Fwiw, I only use green Super Feet. I used custom orthotics a year and half ago. After six months of use, I developed an issue with my left hip. Very uncomfortable to run, but I managed. In October 2012, I ditched the customs and gradually my left hip issue disappeared. It has never returned, so, I’m continuing with what works for me - Super Feet in all my shoes.
I train and run distance events in Newton Motion (stability) w/ a Superfeet blue insert. I race sprints, 5k/10ks in Newton Distance (neutral) with the Superfeet as well. This insert is designed to take the place of the stock insert. This setup works well for me after having an IT band issue when running in a neutral shoe by itself.
I have hard plastic ones that don’t have a soft cover. For quite a few years I just replaced the insole. After I had a few years off running I found the orthotics were hurting my arches so I started placing them under the insole. So you can use them either way, it just depends on the comfort. Now I use them under the insoles I find I often need to buy shoes 1/2 size larger.
As far as shoes go you probably need a neutral shoe to at least provide some support for the orthotic. I find putting them in a non supportive shoe such as a racing flat means they don’t provide me enough support.
