Orthotics for hip/glute, si joint pain

In a nutshell, I battled through an IM in late 2006 only to have a re-occuring pain in the arse act up…I had to have s.i. joint injections (fluroscopy) on my left side. It got better hence I started training for IM Lou in Feb2007 of this year. In Jan I started doing ART at least 2-3 times a month with Deep tissue every 2-3 weeks. Pain stayed mostly on right side.

Well, the pain would go from left to right…Chiro (saw him every now and then) said the s.i. joint was “fixated” i.e. stuck, which is the symptom of something else (muscle imbalance? posture? ) bio-mechanical issue.
Well, I made it through IM LOU this year…but core work, squats, any low body workout seems to aggravate the si/glue area.

Chiro is suggesting foot orthotics as I have done the PT thing (and I do continue to work on my imbalances), pain management, bone-cracking, deep tissue, etc;.

Does anyone have experience with glute/hip/s.i. joint pain and orthotics?

I had/have a similar problem and it was due to weak glute medius/minimus and weak hip flexors. Once I started really working on those muscles my SI joint pain went away. Also if you ride a very aggressive position that can put a lot of strain on the SI joint.

For me I was overcompensating with my TFL on the bike and that was causing my right hip to rotate anteriorly causing the SI joint/right back pain.

It sounds like the chiro is helping treat the symptoms but not the cause which was the case with me too. If you have a structural rather than functional leg length discrpency that can cause low back pain too and a lift might help. If your leg length discrpency is functional it could be due to a rotated pelvis.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you want some more info.
