I’ll be in downtown Orlando the next week, and would like to find some reasonable (i.e., not on trafficked roads) running routes within a reasonable distance of downtown. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Ken, when will you be here? We have a large, friendly club that meets at the downtown YMCA on the corner of Mills and Amelia at 6pm on Mon and Wed. Check www.ymcarunner.com. Monday is a 6.2m city loop and Wed is a jog over to a rubber track (most of the time) for 3m of intervals. I’d also enjoy meeting you. There are a number of routes from the downtown area, if you head south on Mills/17-92 you get into some nice residential areas, the drawback is that most of downtown is brick road. If you go north from downtown, head to Edgewater blvd area or east over towards the Winter Park area for longer runs.
There’s a turkey trot 5k on Thursday downtown, check www.trackshack.com for info.

We’re flying down Sunday, coming back Friday evening. Doing the Evil, er, Magic Kingdom bit with the two daughters. It’s not clear when I’ll be on furlough from prison, I mean family obligations; I was thinking mornings, but we’ll see.
Do you do these runs? It’d be nice to run with someone for a change.
Hey Ken,
I often run with the same club with Marty but also do some early morning runs from the Y during the week. PM me if the mon/weds p.m. runs dont work for you. Are you staying out at disney? If so you could also head to clermont.

I’ll be sans computer, most likely. I’m staying downtown, not at Disney. When I remember where the heck it is, I’ll post. Hopefully, I can meet some of you people for some good, clean fun.

Clean fun? Not the Downtown Y folks…
I stayed at the Grand Boheme downtown and there was a park with a lake in the middle about 8 blocks away. It was a good loop course, proabaly .75 miles or so a lap. Would have been boring except for the TV station taping interviews with a bunch of chorus-line girls dressed like Santa’s helpers.
I’m staying at the Crowne Plaza Universal on Universal Blvd. Mapquest says it’s about 11 miles to Mills & Amelia. A bit too far to run, but I might be able to get there. What’s the “Swimming for Triathletes” thing at the YMCA?
The swimming for triathletes program is Marty’s training group. He can give you all the details. Also from 5-7a.m. is a.g. uss practice. In addition there is masters practice during the evening several nights. If you need to get in to use the pools - let me know & I can hook you up with a 1 day pass, unless you are already a Y member somewhere else then you will already have access to the facility.
Ken,
All the running routes are in Orlando. There is nothing to see here in Clermont.
Ken, I work at the Hard Rock Hotel which is very close to where you are staying. The route that goes around Universal is about 3 miles. Let me know if you would like some company on a run while you are in town. Cheers

My parents used to live in Howey-in-the-Hills. Don’t pull that on me…
If you want to swim AM with the group just let the lady at the front desk know you’re going to join us, I will leave word that we may have a guest. Typically we cover a variety of drills and then a main set. Total yards average 2k. 6-7AM on Tuesday and Friday. Shameless marketing plug: I can introduce you to the Powerstroke ™ concept. The master group is 7-8:30PM, you would need to get a pass or come in as a guest for this one. They swim closer to 4k. The PM group runs are fun, I should be at both next week. PM me for any other info.

Lake Eola is a decent little running course, on weekend mornings there are usually a lot of people out there. It’s a bit far from Universal though. I know there’s a highschool just north of Sand Lake Rd, I think it is on Turkey Lake Rd probably within a stone’s throw of where you are staying. I’m pretty sure they have a track there but I don’t know if it is open to the public for running. Since it’s about a half mile from where you are staying it’s probably worth checking out. There are a lot of run/bike paths but not near where you are.
Glad you mentioned that, I jogged down to Lake Eola and a couple times around the outside perimeter (next to the road as opposed to the lake). Any idea how far a lap on the outside is?
Ken, I stayed at the marriott courtyard downtown on Magnolia. From there you just jog south a few blocks. magnolia becomes rosalind after a few blocks, and right after that you’ll see lake Eola on your left. Might not be a long enough run if you’re looking for some distance, but the neighborhoods just to the north of the lake appear to be nice and safe, with relatively low traffic in the early AM.
I just got back yesterday from a week at Disney with my family. Now is an awesome time of the year to go - there were absolutely zero crowds. We walked straight onto a lot of rides (including space mountain and splash mountain which my kids rode 6 times (each) before I made them quit). Most other rides we waited a max of ten minutes. The kids had a blast. The exception was Epcot where both Soarin (very cool ride) and Test Track had 20-30 minute waits.
One hint - if you (and your girls) want to get absolutely soaking wet, go on the Kali River Rapids at Animal Kingdom the last 45 minutes of the day. We did and never had to get off the ride until the park closed. I think we must have gone around 7 times before we had to finally leave. Lots of fun, especially for kids.
Outside perimeter rectangle is a little more than a mile if I am not mistaken.
