So Stone Temple Pilots have regrouped, put a new disc out, and is on tour. I saw them years ago in Virginia Beach and it was a pretty good show.
Has anyone listened to the new disc and liked it and secondly has anyone seen them this tour?
We don’t get many bands down this way (Lafayette, LA.) so wife and I were thinking of checking them out.
Just saw them a few weeks ago in Cincinnati. I was pretty excited b/c I had not seen them before – tho I had seen Scott W. with Velvet Revolver. He is still a great frontman even tho they are “not” taking drugs anymore and are all settled down (and a little heavier). That being said the Cincinnati show was great - opened with Crackerman, played all the older popular stuff and about 2 -3 songs from the new album. They were all good. The new stuff is good - “Read Between the Lines” being the one song getting the most airtime in my part of the world.
the one caveat to all that is the FALL that occurred during the Cincinnati show. I have argued with my boyfriend about if he was lipsyncing the songs or not - I think so. two minutes into Crackerman, he steps right off the stage and falls into the crowd. You could see the band and backstage people freaking out but he never stops singing and you DON"T hear any change in the lyrics. If I fell I would have been like “WTF”. You can google it and find the videos.
However, all that being said, it may be too late to see them again, it sounds like Scott is back on the smack!
I am a huge 90’s rock fan. Had tickets to 3 STP shows, actually saw them once. First two shows Weiland got arrested right before one and the second time the show was cancelled. Finally saw them and it was a great show. Saw Velvet Revolver twice as well and the tours for their first two albums and those shows were pretty good too.
But from reviews of recent shows it sounds a bit like they are going through the motions and have lost the edge. Friends have said the shows feel pretty “canned”. Between the uncertainty of whether the show will actually occur and the mediocre reviews, I would spend my money elsewhere.
Pearl Jam on the other hand, I know some people don’t like them, but I’ve never met someone who didn’t have a great time at a PJ show. I have brought a lot of casual fans to PJ shows and all left saying, “Wow, that was an awesome show.” They never mail it in, a good mix of old songs, new songs, covers, really talented musicians, great crowd interaction. Definitely worthwhile they next time they are anywhere near you.
Thanks for all the replies. Huge on 90’s rock myself and I’m super pumped Soundgarden is back together; hope to see them yet again (would be my 9th time) if they come near here. You are correct on Pearl Jam; was able to see them twice in the 90’s and was blown away. Keeping an eye on Rancid as well but they are in Europe right now. I think we’ll pass on STP; thanks again.
Not a huge fan of some of Cornell’s recent work, but psyched to see Soundgarden back. Matt Cameron is keeping the 90s bands alive drumming for both PJ and Soundgarden. I’ve seen PJ close to 20 times and when he joined the band ~10 years ago it definitely took them a step up, just a phenomenal drummer.
